THE GAZETTE: TIETOH, GA.. F1UDAZ, NOVEMBER 8, 1895.
THE CITY OF, COLONISTS.
Cor. Macon Telegraph. ,
Fitzohk.u.h, Nov. 2.—(Special.)
—The evening of Halloween present
ed a ghost-like and weired picture,
camp fires blazing before almost ev
ery door, a dark, clouded'Skv, a chib
ly wind and a few drops of rain fall
ing. In spite of rain the fires were
surrounded by crowds of jofly, good
natured people, chatting pleasantly
. and the flickering light and curling
smoke made the forms of bystanders
look unreal and fantastic. Many an
old soldeir was forcibly reminded of
the old times, and perhaps not one of
them has seen so many camp fires at
one time since the war closed.
■■ The new surveying instrument has
been received and colonists here are
much encouraged to kiiotS' tliat three
surveying parties are now at work
and the five-acre tracts are being
rapidly laid out. A great hindrance
to all work and business here is the
difficulty with which orders for ma
terial are filled and the length of
time it takes mail matter and freight
to reach us. Sometimes business
houses wait several days before
answering letters and these may be
delayed on the way several times
and one’s patience is sorely tried.
Th<5 management has secured a
shingle mill for this place, making a
contract with an experienced man to
have ij, mill in operation here in thir
ty days, and this will be a great help
to those who are anxiously waiting
for material before the}' can build.
A new firm is making arrangements
to put in a brickyard at .once, and
tills with the ono already in opera
tion; will do much to aid in the build
ing problem.
A teed store is now open to eus
iomers, the barber has received bis
new furniture and the baker has
very, much improved the quality of
his products, which lie says is due to
the Northern flour which lie is now
able to procure.
A remarkable feature of the life
here is the quiet and peacefulness of
the place at night. There is no un
seemly noise, nothing more alarming
than the. cheerful voices of friends as
they greet in passing, the harmless
'"chaffing and joking heard on every
hand, or the penetrating voices of
Tilton Gleanings.
Cor. Savannah News.
A. S. McDanial, in the employ of
Davis, Conualy & Co., naval stores
men, of Bayboro postoftice, eleven
miles west of Sparks Ga.,waa intrusted
with an order to secure a money
package containing $200 from the
agent at Sparks, but upon 1 his return
claimed that he could not secure the
money ’till the next day. That night,
after securing a valuable
shotgun
iml
belonging to the firm,-he left for
parts unknown, and Mr. Davis, upon
inquiry at the express; office, found
that McDanial had recived the money
the,.day before, Mcfoanial is a man
5 feet 10 inches in hight, sandy com
plexion, wears a mustache, and his

lead to his arrest.
The McElhaney Bros., of Pitts
burg Pa., are here for the purpose of
securing land for fruit growing.
They have decided to purchase the
Ilall farm, three miles west of Tif-
ton.
Mr. M. D. Brooks of Boston, Mass,
has been investigating the fruitgrow
ing advantages of Tifton, and has
decided to embark in the develop
ment of small farms of ten and liven •
ty acres each, for the purpose of sell
ing to northern people. There arc
many people who desire to have
such a property, but do not have the
time to develop it themselves, and
are willing to pay liberal recompense
to those who will. Mr. Brooks lias
followed this line of business in
Florida in the orange industry, wherfj
he now holds large interests. He
lias secured suitable land here and
within flte next sixty days will be
gin operations.
The fanners in the vicinity of
Tifton have cured and baled enough
hay this year to supply all their
wants, and many will have hay to
sell. Heretofore they have had to
purchase imported hay at extrava
gant price. Our people deserve to
bo congratulated for this work of fru
gality, and there is nothing to hinder
all our people throughout wire grass
Georgia from not only producing all
Pittman's 'Productive Peas.
A good deal was said last week
about Mr. W. N. Pittman’s peas that
produce three crops a year, but it
seems that half was not told. A
sample brought to this office yester
day was a root of the first crop of
pdas, the stalk was cut off afew inches
above the ground, and this sprouted
and boro another crop. This iii
turn was cut off near the root, and
the sample before us has on its third
crop of green ioltage and is in full
bloom. Mr. Pittman says that from
a pint of seed* peas which ho planted i
in the spring, he has, in the three
crops borne, had all his family .heed
ed for use, and besides gathering in
all 700 pounds of dry peas. It is
perhaps fortunate that he did not
plant a quart of seed else the pea
market would'have, been glutted.

so zealous are the latter that some
times the meetings last all night. Of

Three weeks ago children were
rarely met with among the colonists,
but now one secs them everywhere
and hears them, too, and the thought
conies that all these children are los
ing precious school time and that
one of our first cares must be for the
equipment of schools for these bright
little ones, who will snroly learn
something, for their minds ^re busy
whether there is school or not.
