Announcement.
The Gazette ha# secured the ser
vices of George M. Weston, an ex
perienced newspaper man,who is mak
ing a thorough canvass of the coun
ty in the interest of the paper. As
it adopts the cash-in-advance system
January 1st, it is imperatively neces
sary that every subscriber should ho
given a chance to settle past dues,
and ai range for a continuance.
We bespeak for our representative
a kind welcome and hospitable treat
ment, which we feel assured he will
receive at the hands of the good peo
ple of old Berrien. Ho represents a
paper in which every citizen of the
county should feet an honest pride,
and for which the money they pay is
only a just return for value received.
The anti-fee bill was defeated in
the legislature Tuesday.
The next national Republican con
vention will meet in 8t. Louis June
16th.
lion. F, G. ouBigmon delivered
an addi ess I mi fore the legislature
Tuesday night.
All over the state goes a wave of
disappointment that our state solons
did not provide n reformatory for
yonng criminals.
The Atlanta Journal Wants to test
the constitutionality of the state bank
law. The repeal of the tax, with ap
propriate safe guards, would have
been the proper thing.
Representative Fleming’s bill to
increase the number of supreme
oourt judges to six has passed. R
also bears a provision making them
elective by popular vote.
Lon Livingston is at his old tricks,
this time trying to twist the tail of
the British lion. The old saw about
tho ass being distinguished by his
bray wits never more applicable than
it is in Lon’s case.
A bill to plaoe the county jails of
the state under charge of tho county
commissioners passed the legislature
this week. A committee of six was
also ^appointed to investigate the
convicts, records of the penitenti
ary, mid nolo oasos worthy of clem
ency.
Artmug the most needed legisla
tion that was impossible to reach at j
this scsien of tho state legislature,
was a readjustment of tho statu!
school system. But this is coming, i
and that in tho near future. Old
< Joorghi is going to See that her sons
ami daughters are well and thorough
ly educated.
The legislative session expired by
limitation on Wednesday night, in
tho mulii. it had been a lmrd work- J
mg one, and deserves miicli credit,!
both for what it has done, and 4or
what it refused to do. Seriously
hampered, as it always is, by local!
bills of only local interest and impor- j
Unco, it lias done remarkably well loi
have ncomplished so much.
ID printing the I’resident's moa-
sage complete last week,, tho Gazette!
does not claim, as some papers would
have done that it did so at Mr, 1
Cleveland's special request. No
doubt, in the hurry and confusion in
cident to the convening of congress,!
the old man forgot to mention it, and
worried as lie is with Tom Heed mid'
tlio silver-bugs, wo do not propose I
to got our hack up a la AtkiiTson.
A CURTAIN LECTURE.
Between Albany and Waycross,
120 miles, and Cordele and Valdosta,
85 miles, there is a section of country
that will one day own a large and
flourishing high school, with all the
preparatory collegiate courses.
Geographically and topographic
ally speaking, and viewed from ev
ery standpoint, Tifton is fitted
pre-eminently for its location. Her
railway facilities are tho -best, and
these arc being rapidly augmented.
Geographically she is in the centre
of this section, and for health she
challenges comparison with all.
In all this 10,000 square miles of
territory there is not a single college.
It is in one of the fastest growing
sections of South Georgia, and with
its score of thousand souls is but en
tering the threshold of that era of ad
vancement that will place it on a
level with the most progressive sec
tion of tho Union.
These people are going to educate
their sons and daughters, and if the
facilities are not at hand, they will
seek them elsewhere. , If Tifton
sleeps over her rights, some other
place will step in and capture the
prize.]
Nothing goes so far or speaks so
well as an advertisement for a town
as a first-class high school. The
custom it brings to the merchants is
tho very best, and the citizenship it
brings th« most choice, It gives a
town a prestige that nothing else can.
To secure such a school, four
things are necessary: Ample and
cheap boarding facilities, an adequate
building, plenty of judicious advertis
ing, and united, harmonious and con
certed action on tho part of our cit
izens.
The building we already have—
one of the best; good board is to be
had on every hand; the Gazette will
see that it gets tho advertising, and
all that is farther needed is unity and
concerted action. If our people give
our school a lukewarm or divided
support, they cannot expeot other
Motions to unite in their favor.
Tifton has had good schools in
tho past, but not wbat they could
have boon, and wbat they can yet bo.
A word to wise people should be
sufficient. The Gazotte has positive
assurance of outside support, and that
of a kind that will be worth thous
ands to us, if wc but shoxt' an united
front, and corno down with a sup
port that would make the school a
guaranteed success.
Let’* do our part. Tho people of
tho surrounding country have prom
ised to meet us half way.
Col. Nesbitt has saved the state
$1,000 out of tho appropriation for
the ngribulturn! department, lie
suggests that this amount be given to
tho fanners by appropriating it to
drnin tho swamp lauds of tho state.
Hon, F, G. duBignon will speak
in Waycross Doc. 14th, at 11 o,clock.
Excursion rates will, he given on all
tho railroads, and tho merchants of
that hustling city will make it a trade
day. Out people should go down to
hear Georgia’s talented young states
man.
