OltlUtVS PLATFORM.
Elsewhere in today’s issue wo pub
lish Judge Griggs’ announcement of
his candidacy for the democratic
nomination for congress.
Like the man, the anounccment is
manly, honest and straight-forward.
Jfe neither hedges nor straddles the
fence, and the ring is that of a true
democrat. On all his view* of pub
lic questions, except a portion of those
on silver the Gazctto cordially agrees
with him. Like him, it believes in
sound money, but believes that an
other means than the unlimited coin
age of silver should he used to that
end. Yet on this question there is a
serious division, and this division
must be healed by compromise in the
natioula convention. Party fealty de
mands it, and party success can on
ly bo secured by it. And when this
platform is promulgated, Jim Griggs
will be on it, and the Gazette on it
with him,- Until that convention
meets the less wo quarrel over this
question, the better the chances for
democratic success in the national
election.
Judge Griggs is a true and tried
democrat, and one that will do honor
to tho grand old Seoond, the homo of
Turner, in tho lower house of tho
national congress.
Utah's two U, H. senators took tha
oath of office Tuesday. The senate
now stands: Republicans, 44; Dem
ocrats, 81); Populists, 0; total, 80, The
republicans lack ono of having a ma
jority, wliilo tho democrats have Gor
man and a sore toe. Tho populists
hold tho empty lmg and the balance
of power.
The number and variety of tho
reports of tha situation in Cuba are
only equaled by tho varied hues of
tho silver question in our own laud
of peace and pic, Tho Spaniards
koop licking ’em’ but like tho Irish
man’s snake, tho Cubuns ain’t con
scious of it.
A man is said to have died over in
Henry county this week at tho tender
ago of 129 years. After putting it
off this long, it would seem to have
boon hardly of nny use to tlie at all,
or else the Wayoross liar has gone up
there on a vacation.
The report is out that .fosse W.
Walters has a knife up his sleeve for
Griggs when tho political pot begins
to simmer. This is a mistake, .less
is not running for congress. He only
thinks ho is.
To the Democrats of the Second Congressional District ;
I am a candidate for your nomination for the next Congress; and
while I. shall enter into no unseemly scramble for office, I propose to
make an active campaign and to discuss all public questions before you
in'a spirit of perfect candor to you an, exact fairness to thfe other gentle- j
men who may seek the same honor at your Muds. 1 ask, therefore, :
that you 'defer reaching unalterable conclusions until you have heard me. ,
J propose tojalk to you plainly and earnestly, as to Democrats
and patriots, all of whom arc equally interested with myself in the final j
triumph of Democratic principles, and, who are willing to abide by the j
properly expressed will and choice of the Democratic party.
I have very decided views on tjie issue now before the people, and, 1
as I. desire no office within your gift unless I am the choice of a major
ity which has bigip hoilestly obtained, I take pleasure in giving to you
rny position on all these questions. These opinions have been enter
tained by me for a long time, and careful study and deliberate thought
have but served to strengthen the conclusions already fixed.
THE FINANCIAL QUESTION
deserves the fullest consideration liy the people. I believe that silver
should he restored to the position occupied by it in our monetary system
prior to its demonetization in 1873. I favor placing it on exact equality
with gold at our mints, the only difference between the two metals
being expressed by the ratio. At the same time I am for sound mon
ey, and believe thoroughly in maintaining the “equal power of every
dollar at all times in the markets and in tlie payment of debts.” I am
firmly convinced that this much desired end can be finaly and perma
nently secured only by the full and complete re-monetization of silver
independently of any othet nation, and at. the present legal ratio. With
the free coinage of silver, t he fifty cents dollar, the bugbear of so many
good people, will be superceded by the one hundred cents dollar which
did duty for eighty-one years of our history before 1873, and which, at
tlie time of its demonetization, was worth three cents more than the
bullion in a gold dollar.
I favor the repeal of the ten per cent tax on
THE ISSUE OK STATE BANKS
Such issue, properly regulated and based on gold and silver, would
be perfectly sound, and would, by reason of its elasticity, greatly in
crease 4vhat political economists call the “efficiency” of our money.
Believing that no person or concern is more entitled to the protec
tion of the government than every other, I favor the continuation of the
fight for a
UKVENUK TARIFF.
Under our system of taxation, the rich contribute comparatively
very little to the support of the general government, I favor an
INCOME TAX.
The wealthy classes should bear their share of the burdens of gov
ernment, as they enjoy their share of its benefits; and if the Constitution
ns now construed prohibits such a tax the constitution should be amended.
I am heartily opposed to the trusts and combinations which now,
octopus like, stretch forth their feeders north, south, east and west, fat
tening on individual industry. It is fearful to contemplate the fact that
a few men can, at. will, from their offices in New York and Chicago,
dictate the price of almost every article of daily consumption in this
country. The price of everything we buy and sell is fixed in the great
exchanges of these two cities. These exchanges arc nothing but great
gambling dens, worse than the casino of Monte Carlo, conducted re
gardless of the rights and interests of the producer and consumer, and
for the exclusive benefit of the gamblers who infest them.
DEMOCRATIC SUPREMACY
in this nation and state is ot paramount importance. The personal fort
unes find opinions of candidates arc as nothing compared to the over
whelming necessity of perpetuating the great principles upon which
tlie Democratic party is founded. The doctrine that the general gov
ernment: should do nothing which the State can do as well; the State
nothing which the county or city can dons well, and they nothing which
the individual can do as well—in short home rule—that principle which
makes of
EVERY CITIZEN A SOVEREIGN
will live in the hearts of Democrats everywhere long after the questions
which may divide us for a season have sunk into “oblivion’s insatiate
maw.” The conclusion of the whole matter, therefore, is that our dif
ferences must be settled within the party.
I believe these views to be expressive of genuine Democracy as
taught by our fathers, and, us art orthodox Democrat, I shall advocate
them earnestly but temperately, and with a proper regard for the rights
of others who may entertain different opinions.
Should you honor me with your confidence I pledge you faithful
service. JAMES M. GRIGGS.
