The Constitution continues steer

its accustomed adroitness.
The Cuban insurgents have been
“badly defeated” again by the Span

Our republican friends in congress
do not seem to bo any more united

It is rather early to be prognosti

the next congressman for the old

The state convict lessees arc up
before the governor this week to
answer the charges of cruel treat
ment brought by tho senate investi
gating committe. So far some very
sensational facts have developed, and
if the investigation will result in the
abolishment of this iniquitous system,
tho people of the state will have
cause to be thankful.
When such men as Carlisle, Mor
gan, Smith, George, Blackburn, Hill,
Crisp, Turner, Clay and duBignon
can’t agree on a question like this sil
ver one, there would realy seem to
be two sides to it. When such giants
as these disagree, dosen’t a little
country weekly make itself ridioulous
tearing its hair And pawing tho earth,
trying to revolutionize tho world’s
finance, instead of keeping its own
shop out of debt? For one, the Ga
zette proposes to devote all its sur
plus energy to building up this gar
den spot of the moral vineyard. While
it proposes to tote Us own end of the
political hand-spike, it is not going
to waste any time trying to brain its
partner with tho other end.
It would be amusing, if it was not
p&thotio, to occasionally hear a little
fresh political Achilles, who lias
never smelled powder, question Jim
Griggs’ democracy. Wo boys who
wore in tho field with him in ’02
whon, for a time, the very foundations
of our stntc government seemed trem
bling in tile balance; who went down
with him into tho heat and smoke of
the battle; who listened to his ring
ing words in Willingham hall in
August of that trying year, and
cracked tho ceiling with our hats at
their close, know better. Yes Jim
Griggs is a democrat; and whether
lie goes to congress or not, his dis
trict is proud of him.
As to this single convention talk:
Suppose, for tho sake of argument,
that Georgia should hold only one
convention. That, of a necessity,
must bo before the meeting of the
national convention. Supposo at
this mooting Georgia should so far
forgot herself as to to adoptfsupposi-
tion only, understand )n free silver
state platform; then when the nation
al convention moots, a compromise
moasnre, ono that does justice to
both sides, is adopted. Then what
aro the democrats of Georgia going
to do? Will they abide tho publics
will of their party, as expressed in
covenlion assembled, or will they cut
themselves lose from all parly afllli-
ation, and try to march to victory
under a banner stolen from the ene
my? Don’t fool with that single bar
rel gun, boys; its loaded at both cmlu,
A GIGANTIC ENTERPRISE.
An cnftrprisc frought with im
mense good for wiregrass Georgia is
just being put into actual working
order, after being foreseen by those
acquainted with* the circumstances
for half a dozen years.
In 1889 tbe writer called attention
to the fact that a railroad was among
the possibilities of the near future
from Moultrie, in Colquitt county, to
Ashburn, in Worth county, and gave
reasons which pointed to this result.
Now that prediction seems to be in
the way of actual verification.
From Pidcock, on the »S. F. & W.
road, a railroad (first a lumber-man’s
tram-road) bas been built a distance
of about thirty miles, to Moultrie, in
Colquitt county. From Moultrie to
Willingham, in Worth, is a distance
of about thirty miles; from Willing
ham to Isabella, the county-seal, is a
distance of three and one-half miles,
and from Isabella to Ashburn, on the
G. S. <fc F., is a distance of sixteen
miles, making a total of eighty miles
from Pidcock to Ashburn.
Of this distance, tho Pidcock road
has already covered thirty miles. Al
ford <fc Sloan’s road, from Willing
ham, extends south to within thirteen
miles of Moultrie, while north they
have a grade extending to within
two miles.of ^Isabella. From Ash
burn, the road of J. S. Betts A Co.,
extends to within four miles of Isa
bella, thus making a continuous line,
with the exception of two breaks
(from Betts A Co’s road to Willing
ham, and from Alford A Sloan’s road
to Moultrie) of oighty miles in
length, connecting the Plant System
with the Southern Hailway, and
joining in bands of glistening steel
the county sites ot two of the most
wealthy and prosperous counties in
the wiregrass.
To complete this great line, it iB
only necessary to fill in these two
gaps, making only about eighteen
miles of road in all, and this the
owners of the roads already built are
amply able to do, and the people of
tho seotion traversed stand ready to
second, in a hearty manner tbe first
movement to make the connection
It would open up one of tbe finest
belts of timber in the wiregrass, and
the turpentine and lumber business
would make it a paying investment
from tbe start.
This would also settle tho removal
question in Worth, and silence the
continued agitation that has done
more than any one thing to keep the
oapitol of the county from a centre of
investment that would have assured
it a county town of more than local
importance.
It would also give that plucky lit
tle hustling sister, Moultrie, another
boost that would set it many steps
forward on thu upward march of
prosperity,
Tho completion of this line, at tho
worst, is oidy a question of time, as
tho lumbermen will complete them to
reach tho timber, but the people
should take time by tho forelock and
push the enterprise to fruition, in or
der to enjoy more speedy results.
