It is said that the spot where Jeff
Davis was captured, uear Irwinville,
is visited daily by northern people
who, if they were allowed to do so,
would cut down 'and carry away, all
tho timber near the place. A party
a few days ago attempted to carry
away a good sized log. They were
discovered by the owner of the tim
ber and asked to desist, which they
did.—Irwin County News.
A special dispatch to the South
ern States -Magazine, of Baltimore,
gives particulars of a Northern and
Western settlers’ convention which
will be held at Southern Pines, N. C.,
on May 5th, to be composed of per
sons from Northern and Western
States and foreign countries who
have settled in the Southern States
of recent years, the object being to
enable leading men from other sec
tions now living in the South, to ex
press through a public convention
their opinion as to the South and its
advantages, attractions and the op
portunities for people from else
where. The governors of the South
ern States are taking a deep interest
in the matter, and the delegates to
the convention will be appointed by
the governors, by county commis
sioners, hy mayors of the cities ami
towns and hy presidents of trade or
ganizations throughout the South.
The Iiiggcst Liar.
Some discussions have been going
on.of late as to the qualities which
go to make up the blue ribbon liar
of creation. Any unmber of news
papers have had a shy at him, aud it is
noticeable also that the concensus of
opinion is that he is the man who
tries to lie out of what lie owes for
subscription.
Wherever a newspaper is published
there lie flourisheth. He has been
known for generations back aud his
tactics have changed but. slightly. '
He lies as cheerfully as ever, and
Ins oily statements make quite as
much impression as of yore.
He is the man, who when dunned
for a year's subscription, says lie on
ly received two or three espies dur
ing the year and refuses to pay. Aud
alsq the mail who takes the paper
for six or seven years and when fl-
nnlly cornered fora settlement says
lie never ordered the paper at all. He
also appear# in the form of a person
who takes the paper for several years
and then moves away without paying
or saying auy tiling about it, and yet
says lie is an honest man.
Again wo find him in the individ
ual who is two or three years behind
on his paper, and pays up one year’s
subscription, and a yeur later, when
dunned, says lie payed up last year
and doesn’t owe but one year.
But the iimmimouH verdict is that
the efforts of the foregoing aggrega
tion of liars pale before the editor
who publishes the obituary of tho
aforesaid liars and intimate that they
have gone to heaven.—Mucon News.
