Albany's Chautauqua is
blast. Lets go up to-day.
Since ho has become the most
prominent factor in republican pol
itics, the mud batteries are being turn
ed on McKinley.
It the democratic party is buried in
the elections this fall, the men who
are prominent in forcing a division
on the financial question will be its
pall bearers.
Ex-President Benjamin Harrison
was married this week. In view of
recent political events, he is one man
that hud rather be married than pres
ident. *
Ex-Judge Criggs has challenged
Ex-Judge Bower to a joint discussion
of the issues of the day. Mr. Bower
has not yet answered, but will proba
bly accept.
President Cleveland’s little daugh
ters are having the measles, which
proves that he ia no hotter than a
country editor, after all. In fact, it
is doubtful if he could be a country
editor.
Dr. W. L. Ryder killed Miss Sol-
lie Owon in Talbotton eurly in the
week because she would not marry
him. Ilis action proves that she
took the wisest course m choosing
death.
Mr. Jno. A. Bibiey will speak in
Dawson on the 18th. Ho offers to
divido time with democrats. It is t
general rumor that he is a candidate
for the populist nomination for con
gress from the Second.
The Cuban matter is now before
the president for his signature. It
is not know whatcoursc he will take,
but it is safe to say that he will in
vestigate tiic matter thoroughly be
fore he gives the bill his approvul.
Judgo Crisp has so far recovered
from his throat trouble as to be ublo
to fill ouch alternate one of the ap
pointments for joint debates. They
Will speak in Albany to-day, but Mr.
Smith will havo no opponent in Way-
oyoss to-morrow.
An editor’s path is not paved witli
rescs, but in the course of his exis
tence lie finds there are a lot of fools
in this world that no or.e else ever
dreams of, ami there are a lot of lit
tle, mean streaks in the average man
that ho keeps oarofully concealed
from every one else.
Elsewhere in to-day’s paper we
.publish the general election law, us
passed by tho last legislature, and
also tho law governing primaries,
As will bo seen by references to it,
voters must register every year, and
those who expect to vote this fall
must register on or after January 1st

TIPTON DOES NEED XT.
Bra ns wick's disastrous blaze leads
us once more to call the attention of
Tif ton’s citizens to a need that stands
high above all others in our little city.
This is a volunteer fire department.
Had a fire broke out in the resi-
dnece part of tqwn during the windy
days last week, our homes would
have been in ashes. The present
facilities are entirely inadequate to
cope with a fire of any dimensions
and before assistance could reach
us, the town would go up in smoke.
Once fairly started, nothing could
stop the flames’ full sway.
A volunteer department would
soon pay for itself in reduced in
surance rates. Lets organize one,
ere our lesson is written in letters of
fire o’er the ruins of our homes and
hopes.
Our ’Bteamed one-eye-dead contem
porary over in the Eleventh says it is
not in the habit of taking to a hole
when the gauntlet is thrown down to
it. If so, we sincerely regret that it
has violated all precedent and broken
the record of a life time in this in
stance, in which it has exhibited not
only hates in getting into the “craw
fish hole,” hut is frantic in its efforts
to pull tho hole in after it We are
quite comfortable, thank you ; have
no cause to be otherwise. You raisec
an issue, we met it squarely; you go
out of your district to seek a conlro
versy in affairs that ure not your own
in return wc ask you a few plain ques
tions which, by your silence, you re
fuse to answer. Until you answer
them yea or nay, we consider the ar
gument closed.
