A Change W Ba?c. ; Judge Orlgg’s Appointment*.
Our neighbor down the rood au- 1 Fl«a«e announce that I will be at
gwers by changing the subject. It is I Nashville Monday,. 25th; Upper
Ex-Gov. Northern m rapidly filling
up tho waste places in Georgia with
desirable settlors.
A cyclone struck Sherman, Texas,
on Friday of last week, and over
200 lives were lost.
Dan Sweat, after great research,
has ascertained that barbers do not
kindle fires with their shavings.
The Gazette has no room for vitu
perative utterances against sound
money or free silver Democrats.
The Waycross Herald says the
free silver craze has busted the solid
South. That may be true, but has
it not about busted itself in the
effort ?
Wednesday Gov. Atkinson ap
pointed Col. J. II. Hall, of Colquitt
county, solicitor general of the south
ern circuit vice H. B. Peeples, re
signed.
The Albuny Herald wants bimet-
ulistn, the Atlanta Journal wunl.fl the
same, and vet those two papers are
wide apart on the financial question.
They divide on the trimmings.
The free silver men had a confer
ence in Albany Wednesday, with a
view to withdrawing one of the. can
didates from the race, but Col.
Wallers refused to have anything
to do with tho conference, and if was
decided to support Judge Griggs.
Tho Gazette did not, publish Judge
Power’s appointments simply because
they were not furnished it. Wo have
nothing tint, tho highest respect for
tho Judge, und are willing to extend hiicIi reason now for bis noiraccupt-
liini every courtesy, and just why mice of the offer, if it is still open to
tho appointments were sen I, to a pa- him. The Stale of Georgia is rich
per outside the county for publica-1 in sound gubernatorial timber.
(.ion, is a puzzler.
The Gazette would be pleased to
well. Some would have thought best
to either put up the proof or shut
up the clap-trap. For the last time
we say the Gazette gave a full ex
planation of its position in its issues
of January 31st, March Cth, 13th
and 27th. We have no space to keep
them standing.
No one said the Times favored the
“free and unlimited, at 10 to 1.” But
in the campaign of ’92, it took the
populists to task for leaving the
party, assuring them that our 1 plat
form afforded ample relief, and free
silver. And on the stump at Poulan,
in Worth county, in July, 1894,
Bright Ben llussell, after paying an
eloquent tribute to Mr. Cleveland,
said that he differed with him on the
financial question, and favored the
free coinage of silver at a ratio of
10 to 1. Strange that he said it when
the Times says he didn’t, but he did.
This is foreign to the question, and
we only adduce it to show that nA
long ago the Times thought it no
hanging crime to supporta free silver
man.
Our contemporary should take
some of its own advice, and put its
simlin in a refrigerator. Perhaps
after a time it could then see thut it
was as far off on one side of the
Democratic platform in advocating a
single gold standard U3 Jim Griggs
is in talking free silver.
It is understood that Governor At
kinson declined a position with a
high salary attachment in order to
serve a second term. This course, it
is said, was urged upon him, by a
number of bis Atlanta friends, as a
party necessity. The Gazette thinks
