Following is the essence of the
platform adopted by the national
democratic convention held in Chi
cago last week:
It reaffirms the allegiance of the
party to those great essential princi
ples of justice and liberty upon
which our institutions are founded.
It demands the free and unlimited
coinage of both gold and silver at
the ratio of 16 to 1, without waiting
for the aid or consent of other na
tions.
It opposes giving bondholders tho
option reserved by law to tho gov
ernment of redeeming such obliga
tions in silver coin or gold coin.
It, opposes the issuing of interest*
hearing bonds in times of peace.
It declares that congress alone lias
the power to coin and issue money,
and demands that the power to cir
culate notes as money he taken from
the national banks, and that all pa-
moncy shall he issued, directly
by the treasury department.
Itjopposes any changes in the pres
ent; tariff laws, except such as may
ho noceesaiy to meet the defloit in
revenue caused by the adverse decis
ion of the supreme court on the in
come tax.
It opposes the importation of for
eign pauper labor.
, It favors the abolishment of all
useless offices.
It denounces federal interference
in local affairs.
It favors carrying out in good
faith the pension laws,
It opposes life tenure in the pub
lic service and advocates such admin
istration of the civil service laws os
will afford equal opportunities to all
citizens of ascertained fitness.
It. demands the enlargement of
the powers of the interstate railroad
commission.
It declares that the Monroe doc
trine inust be maintained.
It favors the improvement of pub
lic waterways.
It opposes a third term for presi
dents. ’
It favors the admission as new
Himes of the territories ns soon as
they have the necessary population
