THE OHIO COLONIZATION ASSO
CIATION.
Editor Gazette:—In answer to
many inquiries in regard to our col
ony affairs we wish, through the col
umns of your paper to make some
general statements to the public.
The Association has 5,205 acres of
land, and holds an option on 10,000
acres more at a low price. Their
lands lie in the central and western
part of Worth county, 10 miles from
Ashburn, on a saw mill log railroad.
The road is standard guage, and
common cars can be run to the colony
grounds.
The company was organized in
Dayton, Ohio, and has a large mem-
ship in the north. The members pay
in their shares in installments, and in
this manner are keeping at present
a small force at work. \Ye will soon
have a saw and planing mill in op
eration, and thus be prepared for
building up the homes for the absent-
members, who will be sent for as
fast as the manager and the members
on the ground arc prepared to ro-
cetvo them.
The principle upon which we are
building is co-operative, nnd the aim
is to give the workers as near as
possible the full value of their pro
duction, There is no clianco for
speculation, and the company,through
its membership, will own and op
erate all its business and productive
affairs by elected and appointed offi
cials. The plan is democratic, and
the power to control lies in the mem
bership.
Our lands are in what is known
as the “Black Belt,” and the country
is rolling, and well drained, which
makes it extremely healthful. There
arc no swamps, and consequently no
malaria. The water is pure and
healthy, and can be had in abundance
both in springs and wells. There is
a good subsoil that will hold fertil
izing material and can easily be en
riched by that moans. We have
plenty of fine sandstone rock, suitable
for building, and an abundance of
good pine timbers interspersed with
some cypress.
Largo crops common to this cli
mate, such as cotton, corn, tobacco,
sugar cane, wheat, oats, sweet pota
toes, rice, peanuts, nnd in fact alj field
crops common to botli the north and
south can be raised. Fruit, among
which we might mention pears,
peaches, apricots, plums, Japanese
persimmons, (large ns a tea cup and
very prolific) and many more, some
of which will not grow north, will
quickly mature and bear enormous
crops. Vegetables and berries of
every discription grow hero in quan
tity and quality that cannot bo ex
celled. The exceptions are rare.
Apples are grown, but not quite so
excellent as some countries, but by
good selection and proper cultivation
can bo made successful. Grapes do
particularly well, and the Georgia
melon has a wide reputation.
The wood lands are covered with
a wild grass on which cattlo and
sheep live the year round without
feeding. Those wishing more ex
plicit particulars should apply to Mr.
Joseph A. Zink, onr worthy manager,
at Ashburn, Worth couniy, Ga. Let

Silk Industry ill the South.
The development of the silk indus
try in this country has assumed such
proportions us to really astonish those
who have not watched its progress.
According to the Bureau of Statis
tics of Pennsylvania, silk mills in
that state produce annually about
1(25,000,000 worth of silk goods. The
product bus increased 25 per cent,
since 1800, und at present 14,000
persons are employed, receiving an
nually $4,000,000 in wages. There
is considerable in this statement for
southern people to think about. Silk
factories ought to bo as profitable iti
most of the southern states us in
Pennsylvania. Power is as cheap,
the transportation facilities are as
good, and as to raw material the
southern states have equally us good
opportunity to secure it as Pennsyl
vania. In some other features of
the industry they really have the ad
vantage. The Manufacturer’s Rec
ord believes that here is a matter
which capitalists who desire a paying
investment in the south would do
well to investigate. While the south
is building so many cotton nulls, why
not erect a few silk mills as well ?”
