Rambling Remarks.
Nashville is one of tho prettiest
sites for a town in southwest Georgia.
It is inhabited by a clever, hospitable
people, has fine church and school
facilities and is steadily growing in
population and commercial import
ance.
Unfortunately, it is not on a rail
road, but its natural advantages,
coupled with the enterprise of its cit
izens, enables the town to not only
hold its own, but steadily advance.
This growth is the natural result of
tho iucroaso in the wealth of the
country surrounding it. You would
have to travel far to find a more de
sirable place of residence than Nash
ville.
There are few counties in the state
that can boast of hotter farming lands
or better farmers than Berrien. Tho
crops produced this year are above
the average, aud peace and plenty
reigns everywhere.
The improvements in the farm
dwellings are as marked for the bet
ter as are tho advances in farming
methods. Nice, comfortable frame
dwellings have largely taken tho
place of the log buildings of ten years
ago, and their surroundings indicate
increased good taste and appreciation
of the beautiful.
A few days at court, after an ab
sence of ten vearH from the county
6hows what great changes can take
place in a decade. The country is
filling up with now people and many
old familiar sights have been oblit
erated by J,hc march of progress.
Then, too, our young men are mating
and opening up now settlements, tho
very best kind of “immigration.”
This ought to bo encouraged to tho
greatest possible extent. Young men
are, for the most part, eager to leave
the farms as soon as they can throw
off parental authority to seek their
fortunes in tho towns and cities. The
result is rarely satisfactory. A far
mer’s life is the most independent on
earth, and in this section a comfort
able competence awaits even ordinary
industry. Therefore, tho Gazette
would urge tho young men of Berrien
to weigh tho subject well before they
decide to leave the calling they have
been brought up in, which holds out
promise of certain success, for, the
worry,disappointments and uncertain
ties of city life.
One serious Iobs to tho country is
tho wholesale destruction of her mag
nificcut pine forests, the richest leg
acy one generation could loavo au-
other. At the present rate, it will
not bo many years before a “lot” of
“round” timber will be spoken of in
tho past tense. It is time UTib subject
was being seriously considered. For
ests have atmospheric influences most
beneficial to man, while lack of them
invites disaster difficult to measure
