McKliiley mid Cuba.
At last it appears that our gov
ernment hiss decided to take some ac
tion with regard to suffering Ameri
cans in Cuba. The appropriation of
*50,000 for the relief of starviug cit
izens of the United States on the
island m a step in the right direction
and means in the end the interven
tion of the government in behalf ot
Cuban independence. Naturally Spain
will object to our tending any expe
dition to the island carrying food for
Americans and the outcome may be
quarrels that will result in the rec
ognition of the rebels as beligerents.
Spain, on the one hand, may claim
that on pretense of carrying aid to
Americans our representatives are se
cretly aiding the insurgents. On the
other hand, we may find the Span
iards are taking what was meant for
our citizens.
In such quarrels there are many
ways in which Spain cau lie put in
the wrong and we can liuve more ex
cuse to recognize the insurgents.
Whatever McKinley’s motive in
having the government make the ap-
I propriatiou makes no difference. The
! important point is that he seems in
clined to take some action in the
Cuban question, and should he pur
sue a vigorous policy in the matter
be will be heartily seconded by
the American people.
The independence of Cuba is only
u matter of time and the sooner the
better. The president can do noth
ing that would make his administra
tion more popular with the people
than help tile insurgents drive the
Spaniards from the island, and set
up a republican form of government
where there is now a monarchical
colony and oppression.

Greek Millionaires.
The friends of modern Greece need
not be disturbed as to the future
prosperity of that country no matter
wliat may be the outcome of the
Turkish war. The situation is by
no means helpless as long as tbe
most prosperous of tbe 5,000,000
Greeks liviug outside of tbe territo
rial limits of that country lend a
helping hand to promote the mother
country's welfare.
Though Greece proper has only
a imputation of about two and a half
millions, the Greeks form forty per
ceut. of the population of European
Turkey, and all the great capitals
and commercial cities, Constantino
ple included, have well-known mil
lionaires of Greek nationality, and
these wealthy citizens of foreign
lands are all benefactors of the home
country.
Tbe renowned Zarisi lives at the
Golden Horn. Baltazzi is the fore

lived and died in Marseilles, and
Gorgios Averow holds fortli in Alex,

These and their brother million
aires at home vie with each other in
denoting a high public spirit and
profound consideration of their
poorer fellow - countrymen. They
have done much for Greece by found
ing schools, asylums, and academies,
and by beautifying its capital and
historic places.
And since the reverses to the
Greek arms large sums of money have
been donated to the war fund and In

lands in New Jersey has advanced
and many farms which had been
abandoned because of the difficulty
in marketing their crops arc now-
tenanted and cultivated. These ob
ject lessons have probably had some
thing to do with the good road move
ment in Pennsylvania. Wc observe
that in many other states much is
being done to improve roads. The
southern states are ooming forward
in this work, though in most of them!
local enterprises and not state legis
lation is responsible for the building
of good roads. Gradually it is get
ting into the heads of the people that
poor roads nrc a heavy tax upon any
community and that good roads nrc
true economy and powerful auxiliar
ies to prosperity. The campaign of
road education is going on and in
the next ten years a marvelous and
bcncficient revolution will be wrought
in our public road system.
No one influence has done so much
for the betterment of the roads of
tbe country than the League of
American Wheelmen.
We would suggest that the cyclists
of Tifton and of Berrien county form
clubs and join tbe L. A. W. With a
thoroughly organized body, alive to
the interests of the people to back
the movement, much can be accom
plished to secure better roads.
