The railroad rate bill looks all
right, but the fact that all sides
claim to be pleased with it, is good
ground for suspicion.
Despite the mass of cumulative
evidence to the contrary, the Gazette
still refuses to believe Mr. Smith is
half as black as the Journal has
painted him.
The Hokeites appear to think a
Democratic primary for Democrats
is an outrage on those who want to
help nominate a candidate for one
party and then turn in and help the
other party to defeat him.

tion: “Resolved, That the negro
should be tntally disfranchised in the

The alntnnl reunion and annual din

speeches will be made on the subject
of "College Reminiscences ” A great
portion of the day will bo given over to
this occasion, that it may be made of
special interest.
Mr Shaller Mathews, of the Unlver>
Georgia populists talk of holding
a convention and putting out a state
ticket of their own this year. This
would be a great deal more straight
forward and commendable than at
tempting to vote in the primary of a
party to which they disclaim allegi
ance.
Mr. Thos. E. Watson, in a letter
to tbe Georgian, says ho is still con
sidering whether or not ho will vote
in the Democrats primary. The
Gazette is not the keeper of Mr.
Watson’s conscience, but it is diffi
cult to understand how he can vote
in .the primary of a party to which
he disclaims allegiance and for which
he has nothing but abuso and villifi-
cation.
During h^is speech at Lake Park,
as reported in the Times, Mr. How

good many people who wanted to

that he is not a betting man himself
bat that Mr. Smith’s friends can get
all the money they want that he will
lose Fulton county by two thousand
votes, that he will lose his own ward
by flvo hundred, that be will loso

not carry the block on which ho lives,
that he will lose Burke county, where

Mr. Editor Blacksbetr Times:
I bad tbe pleasure of attending
the mtuio school closing out at St.
Johns Chapel last Friday. The
school was taught by Ura. Uolle
Wbiddon, of Tifton.
This is something new in our
county, in that Mrs. Widdon teaehes
tnusio tbe same as in literary schools
—takes in at 8 and tarns out at 4
o’cloclf. She teaches vocal, voice
culture, theory and instrumental
mttsia. At one time she bad fire
organs in tbe houseT and all m use.'
She had 18 regular pupils. It was
truly a treat-to listen to the eweet
musio they made. It was wonder
ful to note what had been wrought
among the men and young women
of that neighborhood in so short
time—20 dayB, It was a great
pleasure to me to witness tbe im
provement in these yonng people.
I hope that others in our county
will do likewise, and give their boys
and girls tbe finishing touches of a
musical education. I congratulate
Mrs Whiddon for tho noble and faith
ful work sbo bos rendered to tboso
entrusted to her care. Tho school
paid her well—20 days $90.00—and
it was paid cheerfully by her patrons.
It shows what a woman of talent,
plnck and onergy can do to this
country.
