THE GAZETTE, TlFfON. GA., JUNE 8. .1906.
The Tifton Gazette.
CDUUSHED WEEKLY.
The Gazette Peblishiif Conpao;, Proprielort
Jno. L. HERRING, Editor and Man’g’r
THEY HAVEN’T PAID IT.
It 1« proposed to pass a Illicit license
bill for Tift county. The necessary ad
vertising, which Is beioic run in the
Tifton tisxette, fixes the annual license
at $20,000. We want to make this pre-
diction: that If the bill U passed as ad
vertised, the $20,000 wilt be paid, and
Tifton will become a wet town. Fitz
gerald has aeven saloons with seven
times the ox.*cu*e that one would tie,
and there Is uo sort of doubt that their
net profits exceed $20 TUI) In the aggre
gate — Fitzgerald Knterprise.
The Gazetle does not agree with
AN I.MPOR1 ANT MEASURE.
Every qualified voter of Tifton
will prove recreant to a sacred trust
if he fails to go to the polls next
Tuesday, June 12th, and oast bis
ballot in favor of a public school
eysieni.
After the contract for our now
school building had been let and ar
rangements to float bonds to pay for
same almost completed, it was found
that these bonds could not be placed
unless a system of public schools and
a tax therefor was authorized by a
two-thirds majority of the voters of
the city, at an election held for that
purpose.
The steps to erect a building and
to float bonds were taken by the city
council at the request of the people
of Tifton; our citizens therefore owe
it now to their representatives to' en
dorse by their votes the action taken
and thus render the completion of
the work possible.
The measure is a good one; one
that should receive the hearty en
dorsement of every loyal and public-
spirited citizen, had not the previous
8tops been taken, whioh now render
the success of the election absolute
ly nceessary to prevent great loss
and confusion.
Don’t fail to remember the day
and the need of tho hour and cast
your ballot for a greater and better
Tifton—for a higher and more com
plete education for your children.
-Editor Mercer. On the couirary, it
| considers the tax sufficiently high
to be prohibitive, from the fact that
uo such amount has ever been paid
in any of the high license counties
of the state.
As evidence that it is sufficient for
Tift county is the fact that at any
time within the past fifteen years
liquor could have been sold io Tif
ton by the payment of half the above
amount, the law giving the city the
right to regulate the sale, and the
license having been fixed at $10,000.
But should any dealer be found
with so much money and such little
judgment as to pay the county tax
of $20,000, he would be required
to pay an additional $10,000 before
he could do business in Tifton, and
if that sura is not sufficient to keep
him out, our council stands ready to
raise tho fee to any amount that
may be necessary to make it prohib
itory.
Tift county's tax will be sufficient;
if not, it will be made so.
The old saying among the advo
cates of liquor selling that prohibi
tion is productive of blind tigers is
proven absolutely falso by the situa
tion at Tifton. Now that liquor is
sold almost at Tifton’s door, there
are more arrests and convictions for
the illegal sale of whiskey in the
city than ever before in its history.
As fast as tho police break up one
lot of tigers another springs up, and
the officers ore kept busy, while ibe
treasury is being comfortably filled.
The sale of whiskey increases instead
of diminishes the number of tigers.
Senator Arthur Pue Gorman, of
Marylond, died in Washington Mon
day morning, of heart failure. Ho
had served in the national congress
for twenty-five years, eighteen yeors
of the time in the senate. He was
one of the Democratic party’s ablest
and most aggressive leaders and was
largely instrumental in defeating the
Force bill, which threatened the
South after Cleveland’s administra
tion.
Whether Mr. Smith desires it or
not, nothing would suit the Journal
better just now than a race riot in
the state. Since the beginning of
the campaign, its efforts have been
in that direction, with the Darien
incident as a caso in point What
does the personal organ care for the
death of a few mon if thereby votes
for its candidate can be gained ?
During Mr. Smith’s Fitzgerald
speech, a motto was suspended over
his head "The End Justifies the
Means.” This has ever been the
shibboleth of the unscrupulous poli
tician, and the part of the campaign
conducted by the Journal bus ad
hered strictly thereto.
Of course, there are a lot of Mr.
Smith’s supporters who conscien
tiously believe that a reform in state
politics is necessary, but there are
some mon among his most active
workers who never take a political
step until they see something in it
for themselves.
4 good deal of this stuff about
the packing-house scandal may be
taken with a grain of salt. People
from this section who have visited
the packing houses found them
models of cleanliness.
Another Game.
The Bachelors and Benedicts
played another baseball game to a
stand-still Wednesday afternoon, the
married men again winning by a
score of 1G to 13, before an audi
ence of nearly all Tifton.
Batteries and line-up were about
the same as last week with the ad
dition of Darden and Montgomery
to the Benedicts and a few changes
in the Baohelors line-up.
The score by innings was:
Innings t 23450780
enedlcts ! 3 0 0 1 0 0 16 I —16
Bachelors 0 1 0 0 2 1 1 6 3-11

Managers Robertson and Carson
promiso a game each Wednesday
afternoon during the season; also
that measures will be taken to sup
press tbe crowd of yelling kids that
did so much to mar Wednesday's
gamo. Umpire Wall will also win
tbe tbnnks of tho spectators if be

Tifton, Go., June C, 19(10.
Editor Tifton Gazette:
I am just one of the plain people;
a man who known a great deal more
about fighting "General Green” than
he does about waging political bat-
'les. but I desire to say a word or
two about tho proposed city court
of Tift county. In the first place, I
am of the opinion that I speak the
sentiment of a great majority of tbe
people of Tift county when I say
that we want the court, end that we
want the voters of tbe county to
elect tbe judge and solicitor. But
we want the court anyhow, and will
remember the fellow who fights the
bill just because everything in it is
not just according to his notion.
In the second place, wo sbonld
unite, and I am sure we will, wheth
er the selection is made by appoint
ment or election, to keep free rail
road passes, railroad attorneys aud
agents off of tbe bench and out of
the solicitor’s office. It is the Benti-
mont of the people of Georgia today
that the time has corno for corpora-
tions and those who propose to serve
the people to “break away.”
Yours very truly,
Country.
