From the Griffln ZTtws.
The most significant thing said
and done at the joint debate in At
lanta Friday bight, which was not
very full of significance to the voters
of the state, was when Clark Howell
Vvas protesting that no Hoke Smith
oould outvie him in devotion to the
cause of lower freight rates for At
lanta, a stranger in the gates cried
out with a loud voice:
“How about the rest of the state?”
Immediately an unanimous roar;
arose from that hitherto dissenting
crowd of Hokeites and Howelhtes,
as with one voice they yelled:
‘ Put him. outl”
And forthwith a blue-coated min
ion of the law, who knows his busi
ness and molested no one for any
other questions, hoots, hiBSCB or cat
calls, collared the foolish seeker after
knowledge in such a place and cost
him without tbe walls of the audito
rium; and chewing the end of his
bitter wrath he paid his 3 cents
mileage home, no wiser than the
rest of the 0,000 who put no such
vain questions at a meeting for At
lantans only.
Yet he well might have learned
the one lesson that so many people
in the outlying counties seem so
slow in learning without such a per
sonal application, that the rest of
the state has nothing to do with the
reduced freight rates desired by At
lanta nor with any of the other
projects of these two Atlanta candi
dates.
Addressing an Atlanta audience,
the two candidates told how much
they thought of the dear old town
and felt freo to own how little the
interests of the state troubled their
hearts when her interests were con
corned. And the vast audience, by
its impartial applause of both can
didates, showed how happy it would
be if either of its idols should be
come supreme boss. Well might
they exclaim, since Atlanta, in the
opinion of Atlantans and all ite rival
newspapers, is the state, how can
there bo any rest of the state to
consider? If any man rises to ob
ject to this view—
Put him out!”
