At Alma, where ho fapoko laot Fri
day to near 8,000 people. Col Katill,
npeakin# of •'corporations,” said:
The farmero of Georgia are to
day indebted to corporations known
as banka for the present price of cot
ton. Your money, the people's
money, in the banks of your thriv
ing cities and town** make the great
prosperity that prevails among all
classes in the south; and in no state
is it seen to a greater extout than in
Georgia.
'A few years since, the money
which moved the cotton crop was
borrowed from the banks and money
lenders of the north, and speculators
depressed or advanced the price of
the staple by tightening or loosen
ing Abe money market hi their will.
A few men could get together in
New York, and, by having the north
ern banks call upon the southern
banks for payment of their loans,
mako cotton go down. The plan was
simple. When the northern banks
called for their money the southern
banks called on the merchants, the
merchants on the farmers for what
they owed them, and the farmers
were compelled to sell their cotton
at any sacrifice, in order to. make
their credit good.
“When the cotton crop on hand
became the property of the specula
tors money became easy. Cotton
advanced in price and the specula
tors made the profits. This ‘see
sawiDg’ went on year after year.
“Conditions have changed, thanks
to the corporations which some per
sons would lead you to believe in
jure you and your conditions. The
banks of the south, owned by your
merchants and fanners, now supply
a large part of the money for hand
ling the cotton crop, and the price
cannot be 'see-sawed.' The cotton
money which one producer deposits
in his local bank helps his neighbor
to hold bis cotton.
“Corporations are what are need
ed to still further advance your
prosperity. You and your friends
unite to organize a bank, a cotton
mill, an insurance company, a land
company, or any other enterprise re
quiring capital, and you organize a
corporation and thereby advance
not only your own fortunes, but con
fer a benefit upon the entire com
munity.
If we are to further advance in
prosperity we must keep our money
at home. We want corporations,
and you should see to it that you
are an incorporator.”

There is a good prospect of trouble
in the rank* of the populist*. Chair
man Holloway ot the populist state
executive committee has colled a
popdlist convention to meet in At
lanta on July 4. Mr. Watson says
there ean be no legal, convention of
populists because there is no popu
list organization in a majority of the
oonnties of tbe^tate, that Mr. Hoke
Smith’s platform comes np to the
conditions of his pledge and that
therefore he shall support Mr. Smith
whether the populists put out a ticket
or not,
Acoording to Mr. Watson tbe plan
to call a populist convention is a
"foul scheme,'’ and he will "repudi
ate tbe right of eucb a convention’’
as has been called "to bind the pop
ulists of Georgia.” It is evident that
it is Mr. Watson’s purpose to sup
port Mr. Hoke Smith under any and
all circumstances, but he doesn’t
seem to be willing that other popu
lists shall have tbe privilege of fol
lowing their own oonvietione as to
what they ongbt to do under exist
ing circumstances. It is probably
true that there are thousands of
populists who do not admiro Mr.
Smith, and who do not want to sup
port him, and there may be other
thousands who do not think they
ought to take part in the democratic
primary unless it is their intention
to align themselves with the demo
cratic party.
We assume it is Mr. Watson's pur
pose to support Mr. Smith in the
primary, but does he intend to align
himself with the democratic party?
If not, how ean ho participate in its
primary? And even if he doesn’t
intend to align himself with the
democratic party, as required by the
pledge that will appear on ail ballots
that will be counted in that primary,
would he support the entire tieket
if Mr. Smith shouldn't be nominated?
Evidently there are a great many
of tbe populists of the state who do
not see the situation as Mr. Watson
sees it, and, hence, they want a ticket
of their own. If they nominate a
ticket they will not, of course, take
part in the democratic primary. It
may be they have no intention of
taking part in it whether they nom
inate a ticket or not.
Mr. Watson maxes bis position
clear. He is going to support Mr.
Smith. If tbe populists should name
a ticket that wouldn’t deter him from
carrying out his purpose to do all he
ean to mako Mr. Smith governor.
Mr. Watson's interest in Mr. Smith’s
success is so great that it naturally
causes comment. Will it not cause
many democrats to come to tbe eon-
clusion that the attachment between
ML Smith and Mr. Watson is too
great for the good of the democratic
party in Georgia? Will they not
likely come to the conclusion that it
wouldn't be good polioy for demo
crats to support a man whose elec
tion is so earnestly desired by the
great enemy of their party?—Morn
