Birmingham, Ala., June 10.—With
the selection of Memphis as the
place for the next reunion and the
election of Gen. Clement A. Evans
of Georgia as commander-in-chief to
succeed the late Gen. Stephen D.
Lee. the United Confederate Vete
rans adjourned their annual conven
tion late this afternoon.
The selection of the place of meet
ing aroused great rivalry between
Memphis and Atlanta, these two
cities being the only ones put in
nomination. Strong speeches were
made for each place, but when Vir
ginia came over to the side of Mem
phis the Atlanta supporters realized
that the fight was lost.

Editor Gazette:
Your informant was much inerror
last week when he stated that the
deacons had accepted Bro. Miller’s
resignation.
Many people should learn that a
Baptist 'church is a democratic or
ganization—that m> man or commit
tee can act for the church unless
they are so empowered by the church
in conference. The deacons could
not accept his resignation as pastor
if they would. Furthermore, there
is no probability that his resignation
will be accepted; but the church can
not keep him if he intends to go.

men, are being held at police headquar
ters on charges of being auspicious
characters. .
The men weflt into a cafe yesterday
and asked that a check, valued at $35,
on the National Bank of Tifton, be
cashed. They were given $5 on the
check and tola to return for the remain
der of the money.
Telegraphic communication from Tif->
ton, alleged that the check was a for
gery. Policeman Wilder was then in
formed, and running across the two
men on his beat, he arrested them and
sent them to police headquarters.—
Jacksonville Timea-Union, 11th.
ThipF check was forged oh an old
forn^ used by Mr, Geo. Baker. ABsoon
as it was presented at the bank it was
pronounced a forgery. It is not probable
the young men will be brought here for
trial.
DeWitt’s Little Early Risers, the
famous little liver pills, are sold by

French mushrooms, lobster, crabs,
imported sardines and boned chicken
at W. H. Graham's.
Perhaps it is only due the Gazette
to state that the authority from
which the information was obtained
was the highest to which we could
have gone. It now develops that a
question over the telephone was mis
understood.
The editor, ought to be fairly fa
miliar with Baptist usage. A man
who was nearest and dearest to him,
second only to one in all the world,
spent the best years of his life as a
member of that church and for over
half his life was an official therein.
In his work we were so fortunate as
to be associated with him for many
years.
But it is a pleasure to set Bro.
Miller, whom we all esteem, right in
the matter.
