FFICE MYON BUILDING
With Paving, New Building*, and
Other Attraction, We Could Have
the Tine of Our Live,
How about beginning now, Mr.
Business Men and Citizens, making
arrangements for a monster Fall
Festival here to take place at a suit
able time after the streets are paved
and the other new things the city is
doing and going to do are in proper
shape?
Don’t you think we should do such
thing?
Aren’t you getting prouder of this
hustling little burg every day you
live?
Don’t you want to see things going
or. that will attract others to come
here and “take a look’’ at us?
Course you does!
Well then, now is the best time to
set in motion the formation ot ar
rangements for a festival, to la3t for
whole week. One day to be given
to an automobile parade and show
another to school exhibits; another
to agriculture; another to stock
show; and so on, with plenty of
side attractions of the proper sort
to make it possible to entertain the
crowds that would* come here if the
thing were properly handled and ad
vertised.
But, you say, some of you, that
it is too soon to start such a move
ment. No indeed it’s not. Stop and
think how much Is to be done to
make such an' undertaking a sue'
cess. There will have to be a lot
of work done to bring the feitival to
the point that will make ft the big
gest thing South Georgia ever pull
ed off, so we had best get our heads
together and go to work
What do you say? Shall we or
shall we not?
The Gazette will be glad to hear
from some of the "live wires” in
reference to the matter.

been known for more than a month.
The new company will go In for

the new and old worlds will pour.

HURRYING REPAIRS
OF TIFTON
GEORGIA
The Tifton and Tift county streets
and highwayi are being given prompt
and careful attention. Hardly had
the rains ceased and the clouds open
ed up than gangs were at work. The
work is being pushed just as fast as
men can do it.
It will be sometime, of course, be
fore all the highways can be gone
over and put in passable shape, but
as the tearing up process can not be
blamed on humankind, the fact that
every effort to repair the damage
speedily should be encouraged with
woids of commendation, and not
hindered by anyone finding fault.
All places will be repaired iust as
quickly as possible, the main high
ways—those traveled by the greateet
number should, b# every right, have
attention first.
County to be Authorized to Expend
Seme Amount me City in Caring
for Helpless Pooj\
Yesterday’s Gazette , contained
formal notice of the introduction of
local bill in the General Assembly
to authorize the County Commission
er of Tift to appropriate 375 a month
for the Tift County Hospital, the
same amount that the Ctiy of Tifton
agrees to pay. Under this appro
priation, the paupers and eonvicts
and other charges upon the county
are to be treated free.
This sum is asked that citizens of
Tift county financially unable to pay
for hospital treatment may have an
equal showing with citizens of other
counties which have hospitals. At
present, sick or wounded indigent
have the same treatment at the Tift
County Hospital that pay patients
receive. This expense is borne by an
appropriation of |60 a month from
the city and personal contributions
of 60 cents to $5 a month, amount
ing to $ 100, by individuals. The city
will pay $75 if the county will pay
tije same, and the hospital manage
ment estimates that this, with what
la received from pay patients, w!i:
pay the coat of maintaining the hos
pital without soliciting pereonal con
tributions.

Storm Aftermaths
Lowndes county seems to have
suffered in the recent storms. From
Tucsdsy’a Valdosta Timet we pick
out the following references to some
of the damage done in that part of
the sUte:
"Lowndes county is going to have
to do a great amount of work on
the river bridges. The bridge on
the National Highway, juat north of
the poor house, has been washed
away and the bridge over the With
laeoochcc river east of Hahlru,
known at tbojiagnn bridge, 1* alto
gone. Other OTWgea are threatened
and many of the smaller bridges
have also been damaged considera
bly. ’
House Destroyed by Wlad.
“It is reported that the house of
Mr. Frt-nk .Stubbs located in the
Hahira district was entirely destroy
ed in the terrific wind of Saturday
afternoon and that all of the furni
ture in the house was also torn into
bits.
The report is that Mr. Stubbs, his
wife and his wife’s sisters wtre in
the house at the time of the crash.
All of the furniture was scattered
shout the yard and some of it was
blown into the woods. The house
was completely wrecked. None of
the ocet pants was seriously injured
though they all had narrow escapes.
Csufbt Swimming Rabbits.
“While piddling about the woods
in a boat driving the cattle to dry
land Monday Mr. Jack Staten and
hands on hia place along the river
caught 24 rabbits swimming about in
the water and one monster rattle
snake. The rabbits were hauled into
(he boat and turned loose on dry
land, but the snake was killed with-

The fierce fighting which has marked the Russian advance
across the Stokhod river toward Kovel appears to have quit-
ed down. There has been some activity north of the Stokhod
region, but in Bukowina and Galicia the advance of Gen. Brus-
siloffs troops seems to have halted for the moment.
Russians have met with success in Armenia and report the
capture of Mamakamum fifty miles west of Erzerum and about
the same distance from Erzingan, the objective of the Russian
drive in this direction.
The Turkish forces in retreating from the town, which was
taken by assault, set it on fire.
Fighting cbntinues at isolated points on the Austro-Italian
front and Rome reports some successes in the Adige vallqy and
the recapture in part of positions on Monte Como. Vienna
claims the repulse of a strong Italian attack on Monte Rausto,
south of the Sugana valley.
Around Verdun and especially on the right bank of the
Meuse, bitter and heavy fighting is in progress between the
forces of the German Crown Prince and the French defenders
of the fortress. The Germans, following up their success in
the region of the Damloup battery, have undertaken a strong
offensive toward Fort Souville, the possession of which would
strengthen their position for a further advance on Verdun.
French and German forces south of the Somme apparently
are resting, as there has been almost no activity in the region
of Picardy since the first of the week.
