SATURDAY NIGHT.
(Written forthe Gazette.)
I close fast the portals behind me
Where dwelleth contention and strife;
Where trouble embitters the fountains
That spring from the rivers of life.
I close fast the portals behind me
And wander in spirit afar;
To hills standing blue in the distance
Where’s naught that can hinder or milt-.'
How cool the fresh air in the uplands;
How bright the blue sky overhead;
How fragrant the pine.and the pum bloom..
Whose odors like incense are shed.
How restful the sound of the brooklet
That murmuring runs to the sea;
How wondrous the gift of God’s blessings
So bountifully given, and free.
Thus, unto the soul that is weary
With conflict and questions of doubt,
How sweet is the peace on the hilltops
And all the fair country about.
Alone on the height* where. God dwelleth
So close to the heavens above.
There only do war and dissension
... Give Place to the angels of Love.

Birth of a Nation*: is not a thing ffi view
lightly or thoughtlessly, for in the play to the
emotionnl lies the possibility of the firebrand in
a land where two races dwell. We must not
look upon Stoneman (Thaddeus Stevens) and
forget Lincoln; we must not see John Wilkes
Booth and forget the aged Colonel Cameron:
we must not in gazing on battle in its height
forget the two friends in different uniforms
who die together; we must not see Lynch and
forget the faithful body-servant: nor despise
the negro soldier and forget the fat black cook
and her gallant use of the dipper; for your
own sake, do not look upon the carpet-bagger
and forget the sons of Stoneman.
For all of these are true to type. One is just
as necessary to the complete play as the other;
all unsparable from the whole perfect construc
tion, but too many of them deadly as an adder
if taken individually. The play must be viewed
as a whole.
The play is too massive for criticism; there is
so much in the two and a half hours of its pro
duction to enthrall that the mind balks at dis
secting. It runs the gamut of every human
emotion, just as. in comprehensive terms, plain
even to a child, it gives a nation's history
tabloid.
The cause and rights of the South are pre
sented in argument unanswerable, but with
them the heroism, the loyalty and brotherhood
of the North. Taken separately, few single
scenes would stand the test of analysis; togeth
er, it is incomparable.
