The July Criminal term of Tift
Superior Court wet a short one. U'
convene I Monday mem ng at 10
o'clock and the jury was dismissed
for the term at 11. ~ Court wltl be 1
held • open during the week for the
transaction' of business not requir
ing a jury. ,
There were seventeen cases on
the Criminal docket but not one of
these were ready for trial. The
last one called was the case against
th c Paulk brothers for the killing of
Wiley Mathews and in this the state'
was not ready, as a number of wit
nesses had been summoned for Tues
day Attorneys on both sides an-1
nounce’d .that this case^would ' be
ready for trial at the OctoSir, term.
There are; about a dozen prisoners
in jail, ail for small offenses, and
rone of these have been indicted. ;
Tift county will .be ready for any
war that may tcvne twenty years
from now. if we may judge from
nasons offered in many cases for
postponement. Either a recent or
prospective addition to the popula
tion was the great favorite.

Washington, July 16.—The American drafted army will
be "c'vtlianmade." Military men will have nothing to do
with U until the men are selected and reported “held for ser
vice. Strict orders forbid army mch interpreting ex*
emption or draft laws.
The administration feels that army could jpot be fair*
ly chosen if military men with their stern viewpoint* were al
lowed to interfere. However, everything points to few ex
emptions for industrial reasons and a strk searching of all
claims based on dependents. Hundreds of wealthy youths
who have taken Government positions at low •rc.ges will not
be permitted to escape service in that manner.
It is not expected that the drafting will be under way
before the end of the week. Twelve states, which have not
completed their examination beards, are urged by Secretary
Baker to do-so by tomorrow.
^ ai ^' n $ton, July 17.—There is no place for the word
‘‘Slacker"- in the American vocabulary officials said today.
When the draft is complete it will be impossible for anyone
to be accused, of shirking their duty. None will escape service
without valid reasons.
Drafted men iwll be the heroes of the war and will be
given an opportuinty to get commissions the same as the vol
unteers.
Those who have olunteered to the Coast Artillery and
other inactive branches of service to escape duty in France
will come in for very little glory or reward, according to army
American Headquarters in France, July 17.—The final
intensive drills before going to the firing line are/under way
at the Aerican camp.
The Americans are closely co-operating with the French
division in their last state of preparation.
Washington, July 17,—The authorities expect to be
ready for the draft tomorrow night, and the drawing may
take place this week- The details of the drawing will proba
bly be announced tomorrow.
Rome. July 16.—The Russians have taken the import
ant railway town of Dolina, in Galicia.
Berlin, Ally 17.—The Austro-Germans have retaken Ka-
lusz, according to the announcement of the War Office.
American Port. July 17.—How an American gunnea:
aboard an Anerican transport taking troops to France sunlc
"imal ear. The hearing with a German submarine was told today Ey"6unner James Bray,
open should not be below | . . . __ ... , , ...
'of South Boston, who has just returned here. The excellent
marksmanship of the gunners saved the big transport. After
the submarine was struck her crew was seen struggling in
the water, but they were left to their fate.
Gunner Bray said the convoy had gone ahead of the
transport. Tie submarine was first sighted at 10 o'clock on
the night of June 7th.
The transport zigzagged and two torpedoes swept
across the bov. The submarine then disappeared but ap
parently followed the transport and appeared the next morn
ing. The Americans, naturally a little frightened, but full
of fight, opened fire immediately and sunk the submarine.
