THE LATEST NEWS BY WIRE London, Sept. 27.—Four powerful German counter-at tacks last night failed to wrest from the British force* any of the ground gained yesterday, according to the announcement made by the War Office at noon today. The Germans lost heavily and %fter several futile charges the fighting slackened. London, Sept. 26 The British advance in Belgiuin has Seen resumed. General Haig's forces attacked over a wide front to the northeast of Ypres 'this morning, making good progress. The War Offic* announced at noon that the attacks fol lowed a tremendous bombardment of the German positions from near Langemarche to the district soutl^ of the Ypres- Roulers road. Notwithstanding the necessity of carrying the battle to Crown Prince Rupprecht across uninviting ground—virtually a morass owing to recent rains' and against the inevtable con crete and steel redoubts and woods and shell craters teeming with rapid-fire guns—the English, Scotch and Australasian tioops have snatched valuable vantage points from the Ger mans, but not without terrific opposition- American Headquarter*, Somewhere in France, Sept. 27. —American engineer regiments have been under fire fropn German airmen wfao approached during the darkness drop ping bombs and riddling-the barracks with machine gun fire. The raid was a failure from a military stand point ac cording to the announcement of the Admiralty this morning. Only two of the enemy planes succeeded in fighting their way past the coast defenses- Buenos Ayres, S. A.. Sept. 26.—The action of the Chamber of Deputies in voting for a break with Germany was received with keen approval throughout the republic today.
