Lieutenant Franks Visits Boys In
Training Camps at Charleston.
Lieutenant H. M. Franks, Section
Commander at Jacksonville, Fla., was
In Charleston, S. C., Sunday last,
and on his return to Jacksonvillt
stated that he saw the Tifton boys
while there, and they are all well
situated and happy. Several men
have been enrolled in the Naval
Reserve Force from this city and sec
tion, including Messrs. Arthur' A.
Cobb, Pope B. Harris, S. J. Darnell,
and Ellis H. Pearson, who have re
cently been called into service and
are now doing their bit at the Train
ing Camp at the Charleston Navy
Yard- This camp is ideally located,
being only a few minutes ride on a
car line from the city, and is of
conrse in an.exceptionally healthful
location. - •
The Naval Reserve Force, which
is now open for enrollment of men
in all branches, is quite an attractive
branch of the Naval service. It is of
fering an exceptional opportunity
’or man to enroll in whatever rat
ing he is best qualified to fill and
this opportunity is being taken ad
vantage of by a large number of
nen. Men for line duties are espe
cially wanted by the Naval Reserve
at this time, such as seamen, cox
swains, quartermasters, boatswain's
mates, etc., and those who enroll for
these duties probably will be assipn-
tetive service at a very early
date. With this incentive to offer.
Lieutenant Franks is hoping that
quite a number of men from this
will take advantage of the op
portunity and enroll in the Rescrv
Force.
One of the objects of the Naval
Reserve Force is the enrollment of
reserve force for the Navy, to be eal-
>n in time of war or emergem
•nrious duties in connection with
the defense of the coast, to enable
the Fleet—the first line of defense—
be kept intact, and also for pur
poses of communication, obtaining
information, etc. Men enrolling
in the Naval Reserve Force r
enroll for general service, which
means that they are subject
ders for service anywheya-in the navy
In order to enroll in the Naval
Reserve Force it is necessary to ap
pear at one of the enrollment offices
and pass the required physical
animation. The nearest office is
that of the Eighth Section Sixth
Naval District. 44 Barnett Build
