Although prior to Jan. 1 of the present year there
were more than 200,000 American troops in France, ac
cording to the statementmade by Secretary of War Baker,
the Tuscania was the first transport to be torpedoed on
the voyage from an American port to France. Several
American transports, however, nave been torpedoed on
the. return journey after having debarked troops.
A veranda, cafe and gymnasium, smoking room,
dancing saloons and a novel system of heating and ven
tilating were features of the new liner. <
Atlanta, Feb. 7.—Courtland S. Winn, son of former Mayor
and Mrs. Courtland Winn, was aboard the ill-fated Tuscania.
His fate is unknown. He is a private in Company D, 20th En
London, Feb. 7.—The Adminiftration officially announ
ced today that 210 persons were lost and 2,187 saved when the
transport Tuscania was torpedoed Tuesday.
London, Feb. 7.—Warned by another vessel which sighted
the torpedo, the Tuscania was in the act of turning arouncl
when it was struck, an eye witness today declared.
Washington, Feb. 4.—On February twenty-third the re
maining 72,000 men in the first draft call will start to moving
to camps, Provost Marshal'-General Crowder announced today.
Apportioned to Camp Gordon will be 2,800 colored troops
from Georgia.
Tift county must furnish thirty-seven men onthis call. It
was due thirty-two until five appealed cases were released last
week, which brought the balance to thirty-seven. Nearly all
these are colored.
