Every mother in this section owes it to her
self and her children to attend the session of
the Health Conference at the High Schoel
auditorium during the remaining days of this
week,. No matter how much. practical ex

things she does not know; things that are vital
to the health of her child and to the welfare
of her family. Many of these things she can

A LETTER FROM A SOLDIER
Official Organ City of Tifton
and Tift County, Georgia.
WE CAN ILL SPARE THEM, BUT-
The war has taken a heavy toll from the
workers in the Georgia newspaper field. Very
few' of these offices have not furnished one or
» more men for Uncle Sam's fighting forces, the
toll being heavier among the large papers, of
course. We believe the Savannah Preas sent
fourteen to the front, the Morning News about
an equal number* and nearly alldepartments of
the newspapers of Atlanta.-Augusta, Columbus
and the smaller cities furnishing their quota.
The Gazette, with comparatively small equip
ment, has furnished three. v .
Not lets patriotic has been tbe weekly press,
the only reason they did not furnish larger
numbers being because their working forces
were smaller. Several publishers laid down
.their pens and turned their papers over to
others, in orderto take their places in the ranks.
Now report has it that-Editor Royal Daniel
1 of hoc*
of*the Quitman Fred' Press, who has toured
South Georgia in the interest of the American
Red Cross, has voluntered for Red Cross work
in France and will leave soon for the foreign
field. The news, which comes from the Thomas-
ville Press, adds that the Free Preas will be for
sale.
Georgia, and mote particularly South Geor
gia. can ill afford to lose Editor Daniel but if
he feels the call of duty -it is the only call
that we could see him accept that would re
move him from active newspaper work here
without the deepest regret- We need him. but
the country’s need is greater, and save only on
tie firing line could he sen e it better than
the great relief work for which the Red Cross
offers opportunity. However, should Editor
Daniel go, he could leave a most capable subs
titute in the person of Mrs. Daniel, wl
thlented and gifted writer, unless she should
alaofeel the call to the foreign field.

THE USELESS ROOSTER.
In these days of the triumphant Suffragette,
the male of the species stands on quicksand.
• He is here today, but tomorrow, where will he
be? The once lord of creation stands in dan
ger of following other despots and sharing the
fate of certain czars, kings and potentates who
have nothing left but recollections and time to
kill.
Woman may be content to count mi
equal now. but how long before she will regard
him as an inferior? And how much longer be
fore a woman-ruled world will relegute man
to the scrap-heap; as an useless cumbrancc of
the earth?
AH of which comes to mind from|. reading
State Food Administrator Soule's order for the
preservation of the hen and pullet. Under

male fowl from today until the first of May
Significant it is, that Dr. Soule makes no men
tion - of the roosters If you like chicken, you
can eat as many roosters as you like, providing
you can get them. Consequently, we see the
passing of the rooster.
Only a year or so ago. a bunch of those
scientific sharps told us the rooster had no use
ful mission in life and should be done away
with. Even then we saw the date of his pass

One ray of hope for the male of the human

delicacy, and woman’s well known re-

to eke out the remainder of an existence use
less, an object of tolerant contempt. So much

This is no hardship on us, although it may mean

will find that it is all for the better.
