\gnruitur the Germans were thrusting against the Northern
->i* line on the Flanders battle front. The enemy mf-
™Vfered temporary reverses on both fronts, General
, Haig reported.
In the neighborhood of Villers-Bretonnenx,
the British regained some of the ground by counter
attacks. Northeast of Baillenl, in Flinders, the

held by the British to the east of the French posi
tions. ’
American troops are aiding in the defense of
Amiens. The United States forces the Communi
que disclosed, are holding positions south of the
Somme river and alon? the Avre, in conjunction
with the French. It was against these positions
that the Germans directed their heaviest attacks
in the resumption of the offer.' ve. Fighting conti
nues along a wide front there.
The long range bombardment of Paris was re
sumed last night. *
Paris, April 25.—The Germans captured Hangard-eo-San-
terre, where the ^nerican and French troops are fighting shoul
der to shoulder, me War Office announced.
Washington, April 25.—Fighting Americans are in the
storm center south of the Somme river and are aiding in the
defense of Amiens. Brigaded with the Allies, they are taking
a valient part in the struggle that rages there, according to ad
vices received here today.
The fact that our men are withstanding the Teuton blows
in the major struggle is hailed as welcome tidings here.
Washington. April 25.—The Teuton smash aputh of the
Somme river is likely to go the route of Germany’s other blows
to date. They will advance for a time, but will then be com
pletely blocked.
This is how the military men sized up the prospects today
in the wake of the news that t^e offensive had netted a mile
about Villers-Bretonneux and that the Huns had taken that
pjace.
Washington. April 25.—Germany is holding a mailed fi*t
over Holland to enforce the sanction of supply shipments
through that country into Belgium. If war comes, Germany
would undoubtedly seek to plough through Holland, opening a
path to Belgium.
Military experts here believe that unless Allied forces be
sent to Holland's aid it would require scarcely more than half
a millon Germans to overrun the little country and force their
will.
The Hague, April 25.—German cavalry have appeared
along the Westphalian border, hitherto guarded by Landstrum.
A strong German note demanding a quick reply, has ar
rived. The main demand .is free transportation through Hol
land to Belgium. .
Washington, April 24.—Senator King, of Utah, will hold
up the resolution asking for a declaration of war against Bul
garia and Turkey, is learned authoratively.
The Senator reached this decision following a conference
with President Wilson, who it is understood asked him to let
the resolution die in Committee.
Washington. April 24.—America can put three million men
the fighting line in. France within the year if the ships are
ready, .according to Adjutant-General .McCain in a statement
before the House Military Committee.
Washington. April 22.—German smashes at the American
troops on the Toul sector were met with all the stubborn and
gallant fighting spirit that has always characterized United
States fighters? . -,
Amsterdam'. April 22.—Germany is not sinking American
transports because they are so well convoyed that submarine
are either impossible or extremely hazardous, Capt.
Kuplivetter. writing to the Lokal Anzeiger, naively liSimtted.
