CALVES TO COLLEGE
FROM THE TIFT FARM
No Whines or Complaint* from Private
John Jim Barnes, With the Army
of Occupation.
Wabferlingen, Germany.
Dear Homefolks:—
While I am in Germany I will write
just to let you all know that I am. well
and enjoying life fine. Well, boys, you
all missed half of your life by not com*
tag to France and be with the, brave
boys who were in th e battles and stood
like heroes and fought the Germans and
then marched into Germany and stood
right in their town.
Well, boys, France is a good place.
We marched from France through Lux*
emburg into Germany. Now we are
guarding an outpost. We are having a
good time. Our chance is good. We ait
back and smoke our good old cigars, and
they are the good American smoke, and
that makes them smoke better, too. We
•Iso get a plenty of wine to drink and
beer, a plenty of that. Oh, boy! As we
marched up to the Sedan front we were
singing “God be with us till we meet
again."
Now, boys, remember the boys over
here in Germany are a long ways from
home. I left dear old Tift county the
26th of July, 1018 and I left Gamp
Gordon and landed in Gamp Merritt, N.
J., the 0th of September and then start
ed across the pond. As ever Tours,

MILLION DOLLAR FIRE
In Southern Freight Transfer In Atlan
ta Sunday Night.
Atlanta, March 10—Damage estimated
by railroad officials at approximately
$1,000,000 resulted from the complete
destruction by fire here early tonight of
the Southern Railway freight transfer
at Inman yards.
In addition to the freight transfer,
about eighty carloads of foodstuffs and
other goods of various descriptions were
destroyed by the fire. Twenty empty
freight cars also were destroyed.
The Inman yards transfer was one of
the places affected by the strike of rail
way clerks, several hundred of them be
ing out there, it was stated.
The Inman yards plant was said to be
the largest freight transfer in the South.
It was the point where all freight handled
over the Southern Railway for points to
and from the South was received and re
routed.
A large number of bales of cotton were
lost in the fire. Railroad officials declin
ed to make a statement concerning the
origin of the fire further than to say that
it started in the auditor's office.

of the war. I am real glad too, as four
years like they have handled us and
would be dead. My mind is entirely on
getting back, as the war is over now.
I did not enlist to help clean France np,
but we are doing our bit all the same.
Mud here and rain. No, Deck in our
barracks, double deck bed, no springs
and not much mattress, either.
I hope to have some interesting news
when I come home to tell. I cannot
write nbout this country and what
had to cat here. Warehouses here full
of cats, springs, bods aud mattress of
felt, but we do not get that, though.
There will be plenty of talk when all the
boys return home and some news in the
papers, also. If you will read the pa
pers you will see where the congress
men are investigating conditions over
here. We have mush, or beans for
breakfast and once a week hot cakes for
breakfast nnd only 3 t 0 a man and a
spoon full of syrup and one cup of cof
fee. For -liiin-r mash'd potatoes with
gravy and onions, some time roast beef.
For supper name ns dinner. We had
Corn Willie for Xmas dinner. That
means roast beef canned up
Mud all over the country and water,
and we have to wear rubber boots to
work in and rainconts, as it is sure to
rain. They railed it Bunny France.
But it is raining, muddy France.
I can not nay when ’we will return
home ns I am not in position to ascertain
I think it will be this year some time.
All the boys want to come and the more
they drill us the worse we want to come.
If it was just guard duty and off it
would be better, but guard and drill
is too much. If they c^tch you asleep
on post it means a courtmartial.
I guess John Herring’s boys will give
some of the history of this country and
how it is. He can tell some himself.
Tell grandma this is not a country
like U. S. A. and I do not like it. I
will be glad when I come back. This
is one country I do not like for it's
season and climate. I will close with
love to all,. Your son.
