very scarce, but are occasionally seen
near riven or large creeks or where there
are considerable belts of timber in tbe late

IF FIGHT IS MADE NOW
Critical Time at Hand and Prompt Work
Necessary If Crop Is to be Saved
’^,0. Irani Weevils.
"Now is the tijne for the South Geor
gia cotton growers to save their crop
from tbe boll weevil this year," said -Prof.
J. A. Evans, of Washington D. 0., Acting
Chief of Extension Work in the South
who spent Friday in Tifton In consulta
tion with County Agent A. M. Dickson,
on the boll weevil equation.
"With the staple selling around 30
cents and no propsect of an early drop in
price, the cotton crop ig certainly worth
fighting for," said Prof. Evans. "It can
be saved if the growers Will act promptly
and destroy the weevils as fast as they
appear. Now is the critical time, and
picking up and burning the squares is
the only safe method.
"State Agent J. Phil Campbell and hi*
agents all through the cotton belt is
ducting a vigorous campaign to save the
cotton crop from the weevil, which has al
ready appeared in many sections. I see
it ig already here in considerable numbers
The Bureau of Entomology is conducting

stage where we can say it is absolutely
certain. We do believe that where the
larger planters can command the machin
ery and labor necessary, it will pay to
try it as an experiment.
"But to the great majority, and tlmi
means the small farmers, safety lies in
the old method of picking up the squares
as fast as they fall and destroy them
And to destroy means to burn. It is not
always safe to bury for in loose dirt
or sand the weevils will come through
three or four inches. If buried, the dirt
must be packed.
"Weevils in cotton now will prodace
two, at least, and probably three genera
tions, in time to damage the crop this
year. The average time for propogation
Is twenty days the year around, but in
the summer this is cut down to fifteen
days. The winter weevils that appeared
in late spring, are now dying out and by
the middle of July will be gone. If wr
can keep the new generations down, we
in a measure control the situation
We won’t get rid of all, but can keep
them down so that we can make part of
a crop, at least. Especially can this be
done if wo have hot, dry weather during
July and August to assist.
"The growers should make the fight

A Tire That Is Practically Wear-Proof
THE GILLETTE TIRE of to-day is without a rival. It contains the nearest approach
to wear-proof rubber that the tire industry ha* ever produced. No other tire U made
in the tame way;.. No other rubber manufacturer* can duplicate the “Chilled Rub*
her Proceia.” ’
The Gillette “£huled Rubber Procet*,” developed and perfected by their ChemUt*,
is a method offbpatin? crude rubber. It toughen* and “tempera’’ the rubber in a
manner similar to the heat treating of the higher grade* of steel. It doe* not harden
the rubber in the sense of making it brittle. On the contrary, it actually add* to the
resilience and tensile strength of tires and tube*.
These tires are practically wear-proof, and well nigh indestructible under ordinary
usage. The Gillette Safety is outwearing all other fabric tifes, and the Gillette Cord
Tire is unquestionably the long distance champion.
