The tobacco curing season Is now here,
And the inexperienced tobacco grower
should not become discouraged it any
slight mistake which he might make while
curing his tobacco, as it txkes actual
experience to cure tobacco successfully.
The following rule or formula will give
you some idea as to bow to cure your
tobacco.
Do not crop your tobacco until it Is
ripe. Wb«i you begin to crop it handle
the leaves with care, and do- not bruise
the tobacco in placing it in the barn,
as splotches will show up where it is
bruised, and will injure the sale of it. In
filling the barn it is best not to crowd
the tobacco on the sticks, or to place the
Sticks too close on the "teirpoles." For
the best results sticks ahonld not be
placed less than 6 or 8 inches apart on
the tlerpoles, (this depends upon the sixe
of the tobacco) which allows for plenty
of ventilation necessary for the belt re
sults. When the barn is fnl), the floes
and furnaces should be thoroughly in
spected to see that they are in good shape
and that all dry leaves and trash are re
moved from the inside. If the barn is a
small one place a thermometer near the
center of the barn. If you have a large
size barn it is well to- use two ther
mometers, one on each side. The barn
may now be closed and the fires started.
The first process in curing is called
“yellowing.” To get this result the heat
in the barn should be raised to about 100

opened and the heat in the barn should
be raised from 2 1-2 to 3 degrees an
hour until 125 or 130 degrees is reach
ed.
In the meantime watch the tobacco
to see what effect the heat has upon it.
The purpose in curing is to use the heat
aud ventilators in such a. way as to dry
out the moisture as fast as it is expelled
from the bursting cells of the tobacco
leaves. If the heat is advanced too rapid
ly the moisture will dry on, or in the
leaves and causes the leaves to “redden.’*
The process of advancing hea^ from 100 to
130 degrees is called ‘‘raising on the leaf,”
This process determines the color of the
tobacco, to a great extent, as very little
change takes place in the color after
120 degrees is reached. The heat should
remain at 130 degrees until the leaves
are thoroughly dry, then advance from
3 to 5 degrees an hour until 100 or 170
degrees is reached. During this process
a» well as during other processes the heat
should not fluctuate, or else the low heat

COURT HOUSE SITE BOUGHT
rom the Fcarson Tribune.
Acting upon the advice of the county
attorneys, the committee appointed by
the grand juy of Atkinson superior
court hns dosed a deal with the county’a
Ordinary whereby the county becomes
e owner of a site upon which to build
court house and jail.
This site is located north of and within
hundred yards ot the railroad. Tin
land wns originally owned by H<*n Rena
jnh Pearson, grand father of Mnyor Jeff
Kirkland, and on the advent of the rail-
oad and Pearson was laid off into
town.
The site is an ideal one for the pur
pose, and the only criticism from any
source is regarding the price paid for it,
$3,500. This objection becomes a small
, when it is known that the county has
the land buildings and^umber from
(he sale of which the price can be reduced
several hundredi dollars.
There waa some talk of a suit to avoid
the contract, but the Tribune thinks that
has subsided.
usually the hardest, or last to be cured.
When the stems are dry the fire may be
allowed to go out.
The next step is to remove the tobacco
r.m the curing barn to the storage or
pack house. Before removing it from
the barn to the pack house it should he
allowed to absorb moisture enough to
enable it to be removed without breaking
the leaves and fibers. This is called
'coming in order.” When the tobacco
is in order, remove it from the barn and
hulk it down, that is, place it so that the
stem end of the leaves on the stick is
laid on the tall end of the leaves on the
other stick previously laid down, ft In
other Words, Hake ff Squirt hulk by
placing 4 or 5 sticks in one direction then
placing the next 4 or 5 sticks diagonally
across those, just as shingles are piled,
ontinue this until the pile or bulk is as
high as desired.
