The following excerpts are taken
an address delivered by O. W. Price,
eral Manager of the Nutional Safety
Council, to the American Institute of
Moat Packers.
"It would be necessary to dig a grave
miles long to bury the men, women
and children killed by accidents in the
United Stutes during the 10 months of
otfr participation in the war with Ger
many.
“Approximately 120,000 persons were
killed in accidents in ‘Peaceful America'
and more than 2,000,000 men. women and
children were so serious)/ injured that
they lost over four weeks of time or were
permanently maimed.
"Casualties from accidents each year
are twice as great as were the casualties
among our soldiers, sailors and marines
during the war.
"There never was a time when serious
minded eitizeus generally were waking up
•o fast to a realization of what this loss
meaus to iudustry and society.
"The most significant fact that stands
out in ten years experience in organized
accident prevention is that we have ab
solutely demonstrated that .we can elimi
nate three-fourths of all accidents, deaths
and serious injuries in industry. Not
more than one-third of this can be brought
[ about by mechanical guards.. Two-
thirds must be brought about by educa
tion aud organization.”
On the eve of ‘‘The National Railroad
Accident Prevention Drive” these words,
coming us they do from such unquestion
ed authority, should sink deep into our
minds.
