ChtmV Family Atlas of the world is a large quarto 12 x 11 in ches, with 123 pages. By an inge nious arrangement of table, and by the use of bars of different col ors and lengths, it touches many valuable facts on the principle of object lessons—a system first- in troduced in the Inter-Ocean and now largely used. The colors of the various maps are handsome and well contrasted. The first plate contains cuts of the flags of the lea ding nations of the world ; then fel lows the animal and vegetable ii!'< of the different zones ; then comes maps of the world in three forms— hemispherical, globular ami Morca- tor—Chicago Inter-Ocean. One of the queerest curiosities on the globe is a man with a sliver skull, who is now visiting in Louis ville,. During a fiercely contested lag-tie in the late war he was struck in the head with a piece of shell which tore away the entire top of his skull, leaving the brain most horribly exposed. Strange to say, he survived the terrible wound, and a surgeon succeeded in fitting a siiver plate over the opening, which shielded the brain equally as well as the skull. This plate is about the size of a man’s hand, and works on hinges, and may be raised up and down at will. The reskulled man does not experience the least pain, and as lie wears a wig all evidence of a shattered skull is concealed. Sheriff Hewitt has developed into one of the first horse traders of Carroll county. Attention is called to our Kew- nan letter. It is written by an old newspaper man who handles a live ly quill. Mr. Giles Boggess, her brother, of Mo desto, California, came out with her. The latter is on a visit to rel atives in Houston county. Mr. B and sister are both natives of this county and are children of Hon. Ahaz Boggess, well known to all of our old citizens, as one of the most popular and distinguished citizens that ever lived in Carroll county. We were not satisfied last week with the way the fourth page of our paper was printed. Not un- derstanejidg the press, we did not know exactly how to regulate the impression. Wehnvegot it all right this week and it would he hard, we think, to improve upon the typo graphical appearance of this issue o£ the Free PkEsk. We spoke last week of 2Ir. W. B. Marehman’s large tunrip patch.— The patch is pot only large, but the turnips are also, judging from some specimens that have been laid up on our editorial table the past week. Large as they are, 2U. 21. is selling these turnips at 10 cents per dozen, or U cents for choice. The city council is doing a wise "thing in having.the Bowdon road, below th Free Press office, mac adamized. We learn-that Mr. Janies -Lam bert, who lived four miles west of this place, died Thursday morning, of typhoid fever, at J o’clock. Mr L. was comparatively a young man, in the prime of manhood. He leaves a wife and several small children, who deeply deplore his loss. 2Iiss Annie White, the accom plished daughter of Dr. S. C. White of this place, left the first of the week, via the Georgia Pacific, for Nickosukie, Florida, where she goes to spend the winter with rel atives.' We learn that Dr. Cheney w ill move to Villa Iliea at an early day, where he goes to take charge of llie ) hotel at that place, and that Mr. W. D. I received the first issue of the Times ever printed and also first issue of the Free Press. Am proud that our county has so pro gressed that it can afford two papers and that they are both democratic journals. We were raised and ed ucated in Carroll county and expect to make it our future home. Have been in the west prospecting, but did not find such good water in any of the western country as at home. We shall endeavor, as much as in us lies, to promote the upbuilding of Carroll county, and my native, state, Georgia, as my home is here, my interest is here and my friends are mostly here, especially my warmest friends. We are proud to say that we live in a democratic county and state and we will fur nish occasionally such newe as we think will be of interest to our coim- ty papers, both the Times and Fkkk Pkkss, as wc believe the editors are ouv friends, ami wo desire to see both prosper together with the county. 2Ir.
