There is to he a big sale and ex cursion on the oth instant to Ked- den, on the Coosa river, which is 128 miles west of Atlanta. The sale will be managed by 3Ir. T. A. Fri erson and Col. J. S. James, of course. Miss Lula Howell, daughter of 3fr. H. P. Howell, who once lived near here, was drowned in Sweet water the 24th of November. Asa G. Candler and wife arid chil dren are visiting relatives here. Miss Georgia Bevill, of Iuka, Miss:, is visiting her sister, 3Irs. J. B. Candler. Dr. Slaughter’s fine colt is afflic ted very strangely. She seems to have lost all use of her self, some- tiling like bllnd.staggers; Hejis nur sing her very tenderly, as he prizes her very highly. Tom Tolbert refused +‘2(M> cash for his fine colt, “Bird,” which is a half brother to Dr. Slaughter’s. S. C. Candler sold his colt, also a half sis ter to the others mentioned, to an Atlanta man for quite a handsome sum. She was only 19 months old, and made very good time for her age and training. Dead. The deceased came to Carrollton, on the 20th of November, from Ed- wardsville, Alabama, for the pur pose of assisting in the mechanical department of the Free Press, un til Christmas. The wheat prospect is unusually fine everywhere. A small grocery store, black smith shop and postoffice, is in prospect at Shiloh. Prof. J. C. 3IcGarity will move back to the Lfleventh district. Who will take his place in tlie school here lias not yet been determined. A dog with rabid proclivities passed through this community last week, biting one man (name unknown) on the hand, who per emptorily carved out the piece with a razor, as a preventative of hydrophobia. It is said that in view of a corn- husking at 3H. S. S. Thornton’s to night (Wednesday) that Jim Walk er and Frank Roberson have been Tannerizing for a week, and as a result of their fast, it is prophesied that the first mouthful they swal low can be iieard hit the floor. Villa Rica. . Reported by Special. Our town is steadily and solidly growing. Wo have twentv-two stores here now, sixteen doing a general mercantile business, two hardware, two millinery and two drug stores. Villa Rica has t wo as good hotels as any town.of her size in Georgia. We regret very much to give up 31r. W. T. Dozier, but tlie continued iilness of his wife forces him out yf tli? hotel business. We have two good' livery sta bles and two good blacksmith shops. 3Icssrs. Simmons A Roberds are running a planing mill" here also. They dress and match all the lum ber for rlic town, make brackets and balisters, etc., as cheap as any Atlanta house can get them up Temple. Reported by L. As a writer, he was clear, forcible and incisive, always outspoken and fearless in contending for what he believed to be the right. He was well-known in east Alabama as a journalist, and his editorials were often copied by the press of the state. He met death without fear, being conscious that his end was near. He said a day or two before he died, that if it were not for bis wife and child, on account of bis suffering, he would prefer to die. He also said that his peace had been made with God, and that through faith in the liiood of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, he felt that his sins had been forgiven. The decease leaves a wife and child, who were with him in his last moments, having arrived the day before, from Edwardsville. His brother, Judge T. J. Burton, also ar- AV- II. Temple now has ten dry goods and grocery stores, one millinery store, one livery stable nearly com pleted, two blacksmith shops and several most excellent boarding houses. Some of our merchants have been doing a very good business this fall considering the stringency of times. Up to date there has been about one thousand bales of cotton shipped from this point and since last /pring our merchants have bought exceed ing nine thousand chickens and twenty nine thousand dozen eggs.
