in our hist issue our readers
were informed of the nomination
of Cleveland for the Presidency by
the Democratic convention at Chi

candidates before the convention.
After the nomination of Cleve

until 5 o’clock Friday evening,
when it again assembled, and
Thomas A. Hendricks of Indi

Some children are sent to school

Now “Old Fogy” objects to calis

much valuable time that ought to
be devoted to intellectual culture.
These drills usually occupy not
more than twenty minutes daily,
and they tend to secure graceful
carriage of the body, muscular
strength, and health. Does any pa

must acknowledge that the highest
development of the mind is di

From the language of the great
founders of civilization and refine
ment, the Greeks, we have the
word calisthenics meaning beauti
ful strength. They paid the same
attention to physical as to mental
training;and their educational
methods have furnished us with
models in art and literature which
have never been surpassed. Can
we doubt the wisdom of methods
which produced such results ?
Our critic also says, “The idea is

unsafe guide for impressible
youth. A parent, who intrusts
his child to a teacher with such
low morals is culpably wanting in
parental duty; for moral excel-

NEW YORK, 1881.
About sixty million copies of The Sun
have gone out of our establishment
during the past twelve months.
If you were to paste end to end all the
columns of all The Suns printed and sold
last year you would get a continuous
strip of interresting information, common,
sense, wisdom, sound doctrine, and sane
wit long enough to reach from Printing
House square to the top of Mount Cop
ernicus in the moon, then back to Print
ing House square, and then three-quarters
of the way back to the moon again .
But 'fileSun is written for the inhabit-;
ants of the earth: this same strip of in
telligence would girdle the globe
twenty-seven or twenty-eight times.
If every buyer of a copy of The Sun
during the past year has spent only one
hour over it, anil if his wife or his grand
father lias spent another hour, this news
paper in 1883 has afforded the human
race thirteen thousand years of steady
reading, night and day.
It is only by little calculations like
these that you can form any idea of the
circulation of the most popular of Ameri
can newspapers, or of its inlluenceon the
opinions and actions of American meu
and women.
'file Sun Is, and will continue to be, a
newspaper which tells the truth without
fear of consequences, which gets at the,
facts no matter how much the process
costs, which presents the news of all the
world without waste of words and in the
most readable shape, which is working
with all its heart for the cause of honest
goverment, and which therefore believes,
that the Republican party must go, anil
go in this coming year of our Lord, 1884.
If you know the Sun, you like it al
ready, aud you will read it with accustom
ed dilligence and profit during what is
sure to be the most interesting year in its
history. If you do not yet know the Sun
it is high time to get in the sunshine.
