THE CAMPAIGN OPENS.
The Spirit and Policy cf the Free Press.
AVc intend that flu? .spirit and pol
icy of the Free Press, while under
our control, shall be conservative
and peace making rather than rad
ical and a fomenler of discord and
bad blood. We do not intend to
abuse those who differ with us up
on political or other issues, that may
come up for discussion, but shall try
and observe the golden rule and
treat all with that courtesy .and re
spect, with which we should like to
be treated. Abuse is not argument
nor is it the weapon of a gentle
man, when he meets an opponent
in the intellectual arena. The call
ing an opponent hard names because
he does not see things like you do,
shows not only weakness, but a
bad heart full of the promptings of
the Devil. Never while
we control the columns
of a newspaper shall scurrillity dis
grace them, no not even as a paid
advertisement. For the violent
partisan in politics, we have as lit
tle use as for the religious bigot.
Dogmatism and arrogant self-asser
tion have the contempt of all just
and fair minded men.
While then we do not intend to
indulge in the vocabulary of abuse,
yet when necessary we expect to
use plain English. If a
man is guilty of petit larceny and it
is necessary to define his crime we
should certainly call him a thief.
We do not believe in mincing mat
ters, where it is needfull to speak
plainly, though it may be disagree
able to do so. It sometimes become
the painful duty of the press to ex
pose a rascal or strip) the mask from
the wolf posing in sheep’s clothing.
If it become ours, for the good and
purification of society, to perform
so disagreeeble a task, we trust we
shall be equal to it.
The Hon. |Henry Persons Independent
Democratic Candidate for Congress,
Addresses the People of Carroll.
The Hon. Henry
pendent candidate for Congress
came in on the train Monday ev
ening for the purpose of meeting
his appointment here Tuesday. He
was met at the depot by the brass
band and quite a number of his
friends and others who were drawn
hither by curiosity. The reception
was quite an ovation to Persons.
On Tuesday evening at 1 o’clock
he spoke in the Court House, to a
crowded house. He was intro

We learn by private intelligence
Tuesday evening that Newnan was
enjoying a religious revival unprec
edented in its history. Receiving
the Herald a short time afterwards
we found the following account of
the great religiousawakening: “The
meetings which began at the
Methodist church ten or
twelve days since, have broadened
and deepened in interest since the
arrival of Rev. Sam. Jones last
Thursday night. Vast crowds
throng the house and the whole
community is stirred to-the depths.
Hundreds are asking for the pray
ers of God’s people and men have
been reached who were never be
fore known to manifest any concern
in religion. Yesterday afternoon,
while Mr. Jones held services in
the church for women only, the men
were gathered in the Opera House
and services were conducted by
Rev. J. B. S. Davis. More room is
greatly needed, and no house is
large enough to contain the multi
tudes, so the citizens are erecting
an arbor that all who desire may
hear. It is a work of grace in which
every good citizen as well as Chris
tian is interested, and we trust it
will go on until the whole commu
nity is saved.
The executive committee of the
Whig Republicans met Wednesday
of last week in Atlanta and put out
J. C. Jenkins for Congressman
from the Fifth district, W. H. Reese
from the Third and John S. Rigby
from the Fourth. No other nomi
nations were made but the commit
tee reccomend that candidates be
run in the other districts. Since
the nominations were made we see
it stated that Judge Rigby has de
clined to make the race in this dis
trict.
We have been a close reader of
* the Macon Telegraph for several
years and have always regarded it
as an able, fearless and honest jour
nal. When we remember how Col
A. R. Lamar,its present able Editor,
stood forth almost solitary and alone
in defence of his section, in recon
struction days—-when we remember
how he was threatened with incar
ceration, for bis fearless utterances,
we can but feel the true interests of
Georgia and, of the South are always
safe in his keeping.
ted by Joe’s friends.
Captain Persons introduction was
a beautiful and artistic piece of lit
erary work. Briefly he reviewed
the history of man and the origin
of government and civilization un
til he came down to the founda
tion of our government. This part
of his speech we enjoyed much bet
ter than the latter part, when he
got down to the clap trap of politics.
He entered fully into a history of
the Democratic party
in this country and its methods of
placing its candidates before the
people. In the Democratic party
the presidential candidate was at
first placed before the people by a
congressional caucus. Jackson,
who was looked upon as an expo
nent of true Democracy run against
tlie caucas nominee, Crawford.
Four years afterwards he ran
against Adams and although he had
failed to abide the caucus nomina
tion, he received every Democrat
ic vote in Georgia.
He then briefly reviewed the
present convention system and
advocated as a better plan for get
ting at the will of the people, pri
mary elections. I11 the convention
system two delegates were allowed
to every member of the Legislature.
This was not right, the basis of rep
resentation should be not upon the
entire vote, but upon the Demo
cratic vote. He showed how injus
tice was done to Carroll county by
the present system.
Mr. P. then reviewedbriefly the ac
tion of Marion, Chattahoochee and
Taylor counties in selecting their
Congressional delegates, charging
in effect that Col. Harris had receiv
ed their del egates by trickery and
promises.
He referred to the action of the
West Point convention which re
fused to nominate Harris by actua
tion and then after he was nomina
ted refused to make it unanimous
He claimed this as an evidence of
the disaffection of the party over
the nomination.
In speaking of Muscogee county
he said that it had always had a
candidate before the convention,
but this time it had none and he
wanted to know what this meant j
and intimated that it meant that
there had been some trading going
on. He had understood that the
Columbus politicians had threaten
ed to canvass the district against
him. He dared them to meet him.
He had nothing at stake, if he was
defeated he could go back to
the plow handles. He said that he
was the first man from Georgia
that had jumped from the plow
handles into Congress. This was
worth something to the poor and
toiling young men of the State.
He ridiculed Harris record while
in congress, but said nothing of the
great things he had done, we think
it would have been well for Cap
tain Persons to have remained si
lent on congressional records, for
the two years that he M as in con
gress, he presented a sorry figure,
notwithstanding the demagogical
appeals he made as to what he
would do, when he got there.
He charged that Harris had nev
er done anything for Carroll, not
withstanding that it had always
stood up so manfully for him, and
he appealed to the pride of the
county not to support him for this
reason.
The above we believe are the
most salient points of his speech It
was listened to respectfully and at
times elicited considerable ap
plause, but upon the whole it did
not make as strong an impression
as we thought it M ould, nor do we
believe it did Captain Person’s
cause any great amount of good.
We now believe after hearing
Captain P. fire bis big gun, that be
will be beat in the district, though
we were inclined before to think
he would m in the race.
each officer.
Now Ido not mean to say that
men ought to forget wheth
er they be Democrats or Republi
cans—not at all. Democracy is a
principle that I believe in as strong
as anybody but I mean to say that
no man is entitled to the suffrage of
the people, if all the qualifications
he posesses is that he is a Demo
crat, or a Republican. He must
have in addition-to that, a good,
moral and religious character, with
a degree of common sense and edu
cation, that will make him an hon
est, upright, efficient officer.
Without these qualifications, he is
unworthy the support of the people,
and I hope will not get it. Why?
Because every man is responsible
for his vote and responsible also, in
so far as his vote goes towards ma
king a man an officer, for the con
duct of the official.
('an the people of Carroll county
the religious people—afford to put
their endorsement, by voting, and
become responsible for the acts of a
man who drinks M’liisky, sells whis
ky, or endorses M’hisky in any
way ? Can any one assume respon
sibilities for such a character?
Are our people Milling to trust the
making or enforcement of laws to
men who have not the fear of God
before their eyes? Democrat or
no democrat, he is unu'ortliy.
And the M ay to shun responsibil
ities is not to stay at home and re
fuse to vote at all. No good citizen
will do this. We owe our country
that debt, and we must pay it. The
way to do is to vote for good men
There are to be found that kind of
Democrats. If not, may God rid
our country of Democrats, and the
sooner the hotter. Vote for good
men if you have to vote alone.
Thats my ticket, and tlnits the sort
of a Democrat I am.
