Not long since Judge Buchanan,
congressman from this district, ap-
. pointed to the cadetship at West
point, a son of W. B. Berry of New
nan, one of the richest men in the
district, and now we see from our
exchanges that the Hon. John C.
Nichols of the First district,
has appointed to the same place a
son of ex-congressinan Black, one
of the richest men in that district.
Now because these men are rich
men is no reason why their sons
are not eligible to the cadetship at
the National Military Institute,
though of all others it would
seem, that they would be tbe last
to seek the benefit of an elemosy-
nary institution for the education
of their children as they are amply
able to pay for the same. What
we wish to say is this: That we be
lieve the proper disposition o/ these*
cadetships, is to leave them open,
to the entire youth of the district,
rich and poor alike by competitive
examination. Let the appointment
go to the boy, found to be the most
meritorious, no matter whether he
be the son of the man with the
most money, or an ex-congressman
rich and influential, or the son of
some humble man, who has neith
er wealth nor political influence.
This is the way the Hon IIII Harris
when member of Congress froiuthis
district, disposed of these cadet
ships, and in so doing, we think he
did the proper thing. The military
institute at West Point is suppor
ted by the money of the people of
foot.
