On last Friday at the noon recess
of court, Captain Persons *puko» as
previously announced, in the court
house, lie was introduced by U.
\V. Austin Esq,, of this place,
rot., v l stin’s spKKCH,
lie said he had no apology to
make for introducing Persona, that
ho himselfeould not vote lor Harris
but would support Persons, and
that he loses none of his democracy
by such action. Democracy was
government by the people and com

the Democratic party. All are j f 0 he rightful organization, and lie
agreed that we are obliged to have thought the election of Persons will
organization, especially in national
politics, and it is the duty of all to
support the nominee, when he is
anything like a decent man.
3. Because he served this district
bring this about. Harris was not
called out by the people—a few lit
tle plug hat felows got together in
the towns and
manipilated the thing. The great
mass of the people, the wool hat

made one of the most efficient Harris had always been a disturb-

4. Because he is a reliable and 1 j, e was not the choice of the demo-
trustworthy man, a man of good crats of the district, but of the plug
habits, of good character, such a
man as a prudent man would likely
pick out to attend to his own private
interests, in case he should want an
agent for that purpose.
5. He is an energetic, practical,
industrious man, and it is this class
of men who succeed best in congress
as-well as everywhere else. Any
hat fellows. This was not demo,
cracy, but aristocracy. The people
dont go back on themselves in vo
ting for Persons but go back on
the plug lmt boys. As for himself
lie had no ambition for office, once
had anti then he was actuated by
ambition and not principle, but
now he was actuated by principle
and not ambition. He intended to
do right and when the socalled or-
business intrusted to his care would gaui/ed actetl r j g ht, he would act

tention.
Another Richmond in the Field.
We have before us a circular ad
dressed to the Republicans of the
Fourth congressional district, by
R. F. Milner of Newnan, m which
he announces that he is an inde
pendent Republican candidate for
congress. He makes this an
nouncement he says at the solicita
tion of prominent Republicans in
ways right when not controlled by
the plug hat boys, He said those
politicians who were supporting
Harris were looking forward. They
cried out “the party must be pre
served,” when they meant that ;
their chances foi promotion must
be preserved. The democratic par- j
ty was a party of liberty,!
and that man who did |
not exercise his liberty was not
worthy the name of democrat and
indeed he was a vassal. As for
himself lie had no use for Harris
i and Jiis right bower, Revill—had no
showing, lie wanted to furnish
the nominee ns well as vote for
the candidate and therefore lie fa
vored primary elections as the only
fair way of nomiimtiug candidates.
The thing then would not be left to
a few around the Court House to
name the candidate, but every man
could go to his own precinct, near
his home, and vote directly for his
choice. That was the way they
uuminuted candidates in his coun
ty and It gave satisfaction. He
spoke of the cordial support he had
rendered Judge Buchanan, when
Col. Harris had stood aloof Char
ged Harris with voting for prohibi
tion in Ills county. He understood
tlu^t he had denied being elected a
union man to the secession conven
tion then voting for secession. He
said that was the only
issue then, and
that he had made this same charge
in Talbot county and Col. Harris
had not denied it. In 1878 he would
not make any sacrifice for the par
ty. Rut they say he is the nominee.
But he want, the great mass of the
people had nothing to do with nom
inating him. Five minutes after he
had been nominated at West Point
a delegate said that the trouble.was
to come yet. It was the duty of
that convention to have harmonized
and unified the party not disinte
grate it. That lie Persons came be
fore the people as never any one
came before, He had received peti
tion after petition to run, among
them Senators. But they say Per
sons you are fighting the party —
he will make it a better party by
driving it to purer methods. Inex
perienced as he was when he went
to Congress before he thought he
made a good Congressman. His
rotten apple and worm speeches
were both winning speeches. If he
went back again and he thought he
would he should do what lie could
to advance the material interest of
the country. He would go as the
representative of the people from
the highest to the lowest, he would
go as a Democrat, a fair Democrat,
a liberal Democrat.
Carroll County Sunday School Associa
tion.
The newspapers, both secular
and religous are teeming with de
nunciations of the prevalent dis
honesty which seems to be sapping
the foundations of business all ov
er the land, and many remedies
for the abounding evil are proposed.
There is certainly no lack of legis
lation on the subject, but there is a
woful lack of the enforcement of
the laws, and this results from a
general indifference to erime in the
hearts of the people. This indiffer
ence which lies at the root of the
whole evil, can be removed only by
the i>ower of the gospel. The true
savior of the people must be found
among the preachers of the gospel
and the teachers of religion. It is
the province of the Sunday-school
to teach the young and while it
may hegbeyond our power to correct
the evils of to-day, we can at least
so educate the young as to prevent
them in the generations to come.
This is worthy of our best energies,
and demands a portion of our time.
Inspired by this purpose and im
pressed with the importance of the
work I renew the announcement of
the quarterly meeting of Carroll
county Sunday-school Association
at Old Camp Ground on Friday be
fore the fourth Sunday in Novem
ber. Let us have a large repre
sentation of Sunday-school workers.
The question “what is the relation
of church members to the Sunday-
school,” will be discussed. Come

Captain Persons and his friends
contend that theWest Point con voli

sentiments of the people, in the
nomination of Col. Harris. AVe
don’t know how it was in other
counties^ but so far as this county
was concerned, we have this to say: i OV ed them for the service
If the sentiment of the majority
of the Democrats in Carroll had
had been correctly represented, we
believe that the votes of all
our delegates, instead of half of
them, would have been given Col.
Harris. Of course the delegates had
a right to vote as they pleased as
they were not instructed, but at
the sarne^ time it is our opinion
that this county, rightfully belong
ed to the Harris column at West
Point.
The Election in Ohio and West
Virginia, the skirmish ground of
the November battle, on last Tues
day, throws no light on the situa
tion. Ohio went Republican as us

at 16,000 and West Yirgnia went
CAPTAIN PERSONS’ .SPEECH.
He said that this was a singular
meeting in many respects. Those
present were newspaper readers
and according to the newspapers he
had been completely used up by
the opposition speakers and from
what he could learn since his arri
val they had been used up by the
Newnan lawyers. He said that in
1868 when he started out in his can
vass against Mr. Harris,when he
came into the northern part of the
district, there was no place where
he was more cordially received
than at Newnan and these very
Newnan attorneys who were now
against him, made speeches all
over the district for him. He
they
had rendered him then. As free
men and fair men it was their right
to differ from him now.
Since the foundation of the world
he said that government had much
concerned men. He then went in
to a history of government from
the earliest days, covering much
the same ground he did in a form
er speech here. He affirmed
that the world never made prog
ress until it learned that all knowl
edge came from above. Magna
charta, he said came from a con
cession to the barons of England
and not the people—that it was a
quarrel between the King and ar
istocracy that brought about the
birth of magna charta. Our nation
al constition was the first funda
mental law, in which it was af
firmed that we the people should
do so and so. He entered into a
history of the politics of this coun
ty covering the same ground he did

A Harmful Sport.
An exchange says hat shooting Is
a favorite sport at Montgomery,
Ala., To this may be added, that it
is also a favorite sport throughout
the South wherever young men
have the necessasy leisure, guns
and ammunition. During the sum
mer months what are known as
bullbats are plentiful almost any
where. That boys with their first
guns should shoot hats is expected,
for there is nothing with hair or
feathers, that the American small
boy, and the colored brother will
not shoot, or at least shoot at.
It is not difficult to shoot bullbats;
indeed it requires but little skill or
practice, If at »11 necessary, they
might be killed with rocks. They
arc not game birds, but some peo
ple eat them; and here the small
boy and colored brother may be
brought to the front again. They
will eat jaybirds, jorees, yellowham-
mers and tomtits. .
Rut sportsmen should not shoot
bullbats. If they will persist in do
ing so, they should he prevented by
law. The bullbat is one of the most
useful birds we have. It does not
destroy growing fruits and crops
but it is industrious in catching,
gnats, musquitoes, the cotton moths
which lay eggs from which cotton
worms and caterpillars are hatch
ed.
They destroy what Jure pests to
men, trees and crops, and should re
ceive the same protection that cov
ers the buzzard with the icgis of an
unwritten law everywhere.
There is the leather wing bat, dif
ficult to shoot. It will give plenty
of practice to the gunner, young and
old, and the country can stand a
diminution of the stock of this half
bird and half beast without detri
ment.
Now that it has been decided to
kill the English sparrows, young
sportsmen who cannot find clay
pigeons, may turn their guns on the
imported filibusters.
The shooting of bullbats should
not be a favorite sport in Montgom
ery or anywhere else.—Macon Tel-
graph. ______
