Hydrophobia Treated free.
The atate board of health is
now prepared to give free treat
ment, according to the Pasteur
method, to any citizen threaten
ed with hydrophobia.
Any Georgian who may have
the misfortune to be bitten by a
rabid J og or other animal suffer
ing trom rabies, may be treated
without cost by the most ap
proved and enlightened method
known to science.
To correct the vast amount of
misinformation that exists in the
miiias of the public on this sub>
ject, Dr. H. F. Harris has pre
pared a statement which appears
below.
He treats in a most interesting
way the symptoms of an anima.
suffering with the disease of ra
bies and shows how it may be
detected. He also tells how it
may be detected. He also tells
how any person who is bitten
may proceed. Here is his pre
scription :
Fust, Cauterize the wound,
using concentrated nitric acid
or other caustic.
Second, Send for the Pasteur
treatment, addressing Dr. H. F.
Harris, state board of health,
state capitol, Atlanta.
Third. Don’t kill the dog un
less absolutely necessary. If
the animal is killed, pack his
head in ice and ship to Dr. Har
ris,
Hezekiah Terrell, a Dougher
ty county negro, is now under
treatment of Di. Harris at the
state labratory for this disease,
the first case to be so treated.

tion and even in the advanced stages
affords comfort and relief. Refuse

The article of Dr. Harris,
reating upon this subject, fol
lows :
This disease as it occurs in
man,is piactically always con
veyed by the bite of some animal
the dog being usual offender.
The poison is present iu the sa
liva of the diseased animal and
transmitted th r ongh wounds
made by its bite.”
‘As observed in the dog,
there are two types of the di
sease : one the furious, the other
the paralytic.
“In the furious type of the af-
ection, the animal first appears
restless and somewhat excited.
He seeks dark places and appar
ently prefers to be by himself
In this stage ot the disease the
dog’s appetite is good and may
be excessive • he responds to or
ders, although his attention can
be attracted only for a moment
As the malady progresses the an
imal becomes more and more
restless, and develops a desire to
tear those thihgs about him into
pieces. There is described
pecular bark at this st^ge of the
disease • instead of ending as it
ordinarily does, it is prolonged
and terminates in a higher pitch
ed note stimulating a cry. This
is supposed to be very character
istic at this stage of the affection.
“The appetite gradually di
minishes, food i s refused, and
swollowing becomes dilficult. As
the symptoms gradually progress
the dogs shows signs of delirium
and begins to wander. As a
rule, he goes about with the tail
hung, mouth wide open, and
with a wild look in his eyes, bit.
ing as he goes, everything that
happens to be directly in his
path ; seldom does he turn aside
to disturb anything or anybody.
“In the later stages of the di
sease paralysis generally devel
ops, beignning in the hind legs
and soon involving the body. It
the animal be now caretull^ ob
served it will be seen that he
cannot swallow.
DOES NOT DREAD WATER.
a Mrs. S. Joyce, Claremont, N. H
■writes: “About a year ago 1 bought
two bottles of Foley’s Kidney rein
■edy. It cured me of a severe case
of kidney trouble of several years
standing. It certainly is a grand,
■good medicine; and I heartily rec
ommend it.” Sold by Hamrick’s
Pharmacy.
There io no dread of water, as
name hydrophodia implies, and
as is commonly thought, the ani
mal olten attempting to drink,
but owing to the paralysis of the
muscles of the throat, this is im
possible. Inability then to swab
low either water or solid food is
one ofthe surest and most relia-
blh signs ot rabies. Weakness
become very marked and the anL
mal finally lies down in a stuper
and dies. The entire course of
this type may last from six to
ten da) s, generally it is four or
five.
“The paralytic type of the di
sease occurs in fifteen or twenty
per cent of the cases. The onset
is, as a rule, the same as that ob
served in the furious type. In
stead, however, of the begin
ning -to wander; as previously
mentioned, the animal {becomes
paralyzed, the paralysis first af
fecting the muscles of the jaw,
later of the tongue. As is the
case in the furious type of the di
sease, the animal loses the pow
er to swallow both solids and
liquids, but has no fear of water.
The mouth remains wide open,
the tongue protruding, and an
abundant amount of thick saliva
exudes. The animal remains
quiet, does not attempt to bite
any animal or individual. Death
occurs on the second or third
day of the disease.
WOUNDS SHOULD BK CAUTERIZED
“Precautions : When an indi
vidual is bitten by an animal
either supposed or known to be
rabid, the wound should be im
mediately cauterized with some
caustic, preferably concentrated
nitric acid. This shonld be ap
plied without fear, because it is
safer to use too much than too
little. In case this is not available
any strong caustic may be used.
Punctured wounds should be
laid open with a kmte and the
surfaces lreely cauterized, it
should not be sorgotten that the
slightest scratch from the tooth
of a rabid animal may lead to the
development of hydrophobia in
man, and it therefore, behooves
all persons bitten by dogs to
take every possible precaution.
Even though the animal at the
time may appear to be healthy,
some Btrong antiseptic should be
applied to the wound and th«
animal carefully watched until
all posibility ot his having the
disease has passed.
“Many persons have died from
slight wounds inflicted by ani
mals appearing of the time to be
perfectly well.
CLOTHING SAVES MANY.
’‘Attention should also be di
rected to the fact that wounds
where the teeth of the annual
pass through the clothing are
not so dangerous as those where
no such protection intervenes.
“Bites about the lace and
head are much more frequently
followed by rabbies than those in
flicted on the extremities, and
of course, where wounds fre
deep the chances of infection
are much greater ; where injuries
ot the latter kind a>e inflicted, it
is practically ou: of the question
to thoroughly cauterize them
and the patient should immed
iately receive the Pasteur treat
ment. It is probable that if
throughout cauterization be not
done within five minutes, that
it cannot be relied on to prevent
the development of the disease ;
where there is no doubt, Jdie on
ly safety lies in the P. steur
a treatment. After having attended
to this, the animal inflicting the
wound should be caught, isolated
and allowed to die.
“Under no condition should
thejaoimal be shot^unless abso
lutely necessary. After death
the head of the dog should be
removed, packed in a sufficient
quanity of ice to keep the speci
men cold, and expressed at once
to the laboratory of the state
board of health. The necessary
examination can then be made
and the presence or absence of
of rabies determined. A report
will be tnrnished of the findings
either by mail or telegraph as
requested.
COURSE OF TREATMENT.
“Treatment: Since the epoch
making researches of Pasteur,
laboratories have been installed
in various parts of the world for
the purpose of making a vacine
by means of which it is possible,
by gradual immunization, to
prevent the development of
hydrophobia in persons bitten
by rabid dogs. This is done by
a series of injections of a weak
virus prepared according to the

It is absolutely necessary that
the vaccine sent out be injected
at once after its receipt, as it
will not keep even a day. The
injections should be given with
a sterile syringe. After having
thoroughly shaken the bottle the
contents are aspirated in the
syringe, and the same injected
in the subcutaneous tissue over

treatment varies from three to
four weeks different portions of
the abdomen widly separated
should be selected for each in
jection. Gradually toward the
end ot the treatment a slight
local reaction occurs about the
point ot inoculation. This is
treated, should it occur, after
the same manner as one treats
an ordinary cellulitis. It should
always be remembered that no
harih can come from the treat
ment, whether the patient was
bitten by a rabid dog or not and
that in all cases of doubt no lies-
itatian should be felt in restoring
to it.
INFORMATON NEEDED.
