THE HOME
It is not a favorable omen to
see a man smoking a cob pipe
while his wife milks the cow.
If you have a bitter pill to
gulp it down, don’t chew it. So
many peeple chew their pills,
and oh how bitter.
It has been said that to have
the children in your power
would be to control the destiny
of the world, but give us the
mothers and let them realize
their power, and we will have
the children.
Every honest prayer that is
breathed, every cross that is
carried, every trial that is well
endured, every good work for
our fellow-men lovingly done,
every little task that is consci’
entiously performed for Christ’s
gloiy, helps to make Christian
character beautiful, and to load
its boughs with “Apples of gold”
lor God’s ‘‘baskets ol silver.”

Parents keep your boys of!
the street, especially after dark.
You know not what annoyance
these little fellows are, besides
they learn all kinds of meanness
picking up all the slang phrases
uttered by older boys who have
torgotten the prayers taught
them at their mothei’s knee
when they, too, were innocent
little tots like your own boys
now. If you have nice beautiful
yards, allow your boya to play
in them, never scolding them
for their merry laughter, for ’tis
better far to be annoyed at home
than to have them mixed up in
an ugly affair on the street ol
which you know nothing until
■t has grown cold on every one’s
tongue. If you value their ed
ucation as you should, you will
keep your boys rff the street,
where no evil association will
coriupt their morals.
“There is no good reason
why a man should needlessly
put his own wite to the trouble
of wiping up the tracks, when
he takes great pains to clean
his feet before crossing his
neighbor’s thresheold; neither
is it consistant that we women
should be too severe on our own
husband and son for a little
carelessness, when we assure
our callers, with the most gra
cious of smiles, “that it isn’t of
the slighest consequences.”
were we too noisy?” In that
house reproof was never bestow
ed unsought only condemnation,
of whatever it was possible to
commend, was gratuitous.
We think this system would
be as good for those grown-up
ceildren, the husbands and wives
as lor those still in the nursery.

COURTESY AT HOME.
Good breeding, like charity,
should begin at home. Tne day
is past when children used to
rise when their parents entered
the roomjwhere they were and
stand until they had received
permission to sit But the mistake
is now made usually in the other
direction in allowtng to small
boys and girls to much license
to disturb the peace of the house
hold. We think the best way to
train children in c urtesy w ould
be to observe toward them a
scrupulous politeness. We would
go so far as to say that we should
make it as much a point to listen
to children without interrupting
them and to answer them sincere
ly and respectfully as if the}
were grown up. And, indeed,
many of their wise, quaint say
ings are far better worth listen
ing to than the stereotyped com
monplaces of the morning call
ers. Ol course, to allow uninter
rupted chatter would be to sur
render the repose ol the house
hold, but it is very easy, if child
ren are themselves scrupulously
to respect the convenience ol
others, and to know when to
talk and when to be silent.
If a child is brought up in the
constant exercise of courtesy
toward brothers and sisters and
playmates, as well as toward
parents and uncles and aunts, it
will have little left to learn as it
^rows older.
The best brought up lamily
of children we ever knew were
educated on the principle of al
ways commending them when
it was possible to do so, and
letting silence be the reproof of
any wrong doing which was not
really serious. We have heard
the children of this household,
when their mother had failed to
IF I ONLY HAD CAl’ITAL
The above words were recent
ly uttered in our hearing by a
worthy boy and undoubtedly
they are often reiterated by
many who are out ol employ
ment, or have little or nothing to
do. To all such we say, you
have home capital, you have
hands, feet, bone, muscle, health
and are not these capital ? What
more capital has God givtn any
body? “But it I only had a few
thousand in cash capital” says
the youug man. But those are
better than cash capital, for no
one can take them from you, and
with these you can earn cash.
Our men of wealth and influ
ence did not start with any cash
capital. They went to work with
their plow, the hoe. the jack
plane or axe, and in time their
capital brought them a rich har
vest. Ah ! but there’s the rub ;
you don’t want to work . You
want money on credit so you
can play the gentleman, specu
late and end your career by
playing ^vagabond. You want
to marry a rich girl who will
support you, while you wear fine
clothes, smoke cigars and be a
gentleman of leisure.
Shame ol you, young man!
Go to work with the capital you
have and you will soon make in
terest enough upon it to give
you as much money as you need.
If you cannot make money upon
what capital you have, you could
not if you had a larger amount
in cash. If you waste your pres
ent capital you would waste
money it you had it. So don’t
stand around, a helpless fellow,
waiting for something to turn up,
but go to work. Take the first
work you can get and do it well.
Always do your best, and it you
manage your capital that God has
given you well, you will soon
have plenty more to manage.
IS LIFE WORTH LIVING?
When yon hear this question
asked by a man or woman, with
lips curved downward and voice
attuned to discontent, you may
set that person down as supreme
ly selfish. He or she asks prac
tically, “Is life worth living tor
me?’’ Worth living? Of cour t
it is, so long as there is one sin
gle other soul in the world. If
the querist were the last ol his
race, then indeed the answer
might well be “No but while
there is another human being foi
whom we cau do a favor, or
whose interest we may advance,
life is worth living.
Friend, when you find your
self depressed and incl ned to
think that life holds nothing for
you, look around you (not very-
far away,! and do the very first
favor for another that comes to
your hand. It may be a very
small one, but do it; and keep
on, day by day, hour by hour,
minute by minute, working for
others alone makes life worth
living.
Carrollton, Ga., Maarch 31, 1908.
Mr. Fitzhugh Lee, Atlanta, Ga.
Dear Sir:—Replying to your in
quiry as to what 1 think of the L. &
M. paint will say, that 24 years ago
1 painted a house at Whitesburg,
Ga., for Prof. W. H. Andrews with
L. & M. Color Drab. Up to the
time that this house was repainted
some two or three years ago. It
looked better than most houses that
had been painted only 2 or 3 years.
1 consider that L. & M. paint has
no superior in spreading, lasting,
and permanency of color.
Very Respectfully,
G. D. Glass.
