PAUL BITTEN BY A SNAKE.
‘And when Paul had gather
ed a bundle of sticks and laid
them on the fire, there came a
viper out of the heat and fasten
ed on his hand, and he shook oft
the beast into the fire and felt no
harm,’’ Acts 2813, 5.
Here we. find that Saul of
whom we have been studying
is called Paul, and it you will
read Acts 13:9 that Saul was
also called Paul, so when we
read ot Paul, we may know that
he is the same man, who was
called Saul of Tarsus, but as a
Christian and apostle of JeBus
Christ, he is called Paul.
He was one of the most faith
ful and powerful preachers
among all of the apostles, per
forming some great wonders be
fore the people as you learn by
reading tn the book of Acts, and
because of this, he was greatly
persecuted, and at one time he
a as in prison and fastened in the
I ocks, he and his triends and co
.vorker Silas. See Acts i6t 1
chapter how God sent an earth
quake, and shook the prison
djors open and released thun
trom the prison, the jailo-, in his
alarm fell down betore them cry
ing and saying, “What must I
do to be saved and they told him
t > believe on Jesus aid he should
oe saved, and as soon as he could
he took them out and washed
the bloody scars mad ! on them
by whipping, before he put them
into prison, and they baptized
him. He then took them into
his own house, gave them sup
per, and rejoiced, believing in
God, likewise did the others of
family.
This shows us how wonderful
ly God can work in the hi a-t and
life of any one, who like Paul,
will believe and obey him. We
see also how he helped Paul
to make great changes in the
lives of others. But as we have
seen, some hated him because
he had become a Christian and
was preaching Jesus and his res
urrection, declaring him to be
the son of God and the only Sa
viour.
They therefore took and
bound him a prisoner, and were
carrying him to Rome to accuse
him before the highest court in
order to have him put to death,
and as* they were crossing the
sea on their way to Rome, there
came a great storm upon them,
and continued to rage for two
weeks, so that they could not see
the sun all these days, by reasou
of the s'orm clouds, land as they
esme near an island called Me.
ita, but now cilled Malta, the
ship was broken to pieces by the
terrible waves, and all the people
had to cling to pieces of ihe bro
ken ship to keep from being
drowned, except those who could
swim out, and when they got on
land, they were all wet and cold,
and began making a fire of any
sort of brush or sticks they could
find, for they were very wet
and cold.
Now Paul, though a prisoner,
bound with a chain, he went and
gathered an armful of sticks to
put on the fire, and as he was
putting them on the fire, a
viper, a very poison snake bit
Every ease of Rheumatism has its origin and its development in the
blood. It is not a disease which is contracted like a cold, but it is in the
blood and system before a pain is felt, and the changes in the weather or
any physical irregularities, such as a spell of indigestion, bowel disturbance,
etc., are merely the exciting causes producing the pains and aches, which
are the natural symptoms of the disease. Rheumatism is caused by an
excess of uric acid and other corrosive, irritating poisons in the blood, which
are carried through the circulation to every part of the system. Every
muscle, nerve, membrane, tissue and joint becomes saturated with these
acrid, irritating .impurities, or coated with fine, insoluble caustic matter,
and the sharp, piercing pains or the dull, constant aches are felt with every
physical movement. When the blood is filled with uric acid poison, perma
nent relief cannot be expected from liniments, plasters, or other external
treatment. Such measures give temporary relief, but in order to conquer
Rheumatism and bring about a
complete cure, the uric acid and
other inflammatory matter must be
expelled, and this cannot be done
with external treatment. S. S. S.
cures Rheumatism because it is a
perfect and entirely vegetable blood
purifier. It goes down into the
circulation, neutralizes the acids,
and dissolves the irritating depos
its which are pressing on the sensi
tive nerves and tissues and produc
ing pain, enriches the weak, sour
blood, and removes every atom of
impurity from the circulation. So
instead of being a weak, sour
stream, distributing uric acid to the
different parts of the system, the
blood is strong and healthy and
therefore able to supply every mils
