AWAY FROM HOME;- • ~
To a young man away from
home, friendless and forlorn in a
great city, the hours ot peril are
those between sunset and bed
time. The moon and stars see
more evil in a tingle hour than
the sun in a whole day’s circut.
The poet’s visions of evening
are all compact of tender and
soothing images. It brings the
wanderer to his home, the child
to it’s mother’s arms, and the ox
t > his stall and weary laborer to
nis rest. But to the tenderhearted
youth who s thrown u, on the
locks ot a pilless city, and stands
“homeless among a thousand
homes,” the approach of even
ing brings with it an aching
lonlints< and desolation, which
comes down on the spirit like
darkness upon the earth. In this
mood his best impulses become
a snare to him, and he is led
estray because he is social, affec
tionate, sympathetic, and warm
hearted. If there be a young man
thus circumstanced who is a
reader of this department, let us
say to him that books are the
friends of the friendless and that
a wisely selected library is the
home of the homeless. A taste
for reading will always carry
von to converse with those who
will instruct you by their wisdom,
and charm you by their wit, who
soothe you when frett< d, refresh
you when weary, counsel you
when perplexed, and sympa
thize with you at all times. In
the middle ages evil apirits were
driven away by bell, book aud
candle.

HOME ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
“Accomplishments,” We like
such sentiment, and we like to,
a spirit that dares speak out for
the right in this over accomplish-
id age, A woman who tails in
her home fails in all. Home is
woman’s realm, given into her
hands to regulate, govern aud
beautify.
If she tails here she may look in
vain for another kingdom; for
she has failed in the Only spot
where she could have ultimately
succeeded. She has laid down
the jewels which God gave her
to brighten and polish, aud in
their place finds nothing but
dust and ashes. It is a conceded
fact that there is no evil without
a remedy, and it became us t j
inquire, where is the evil and
what is the cure?

She marries with an hottest de
sire to make her home a happy
one, but not being r.lad in tfn
armor of a well-dril ed house
keeper, she fails. Her accom
plishments lose their power;
day by day she feels her utter
unfitness for her station j until at
last she despaires ot evef mak
ing a cheerful home for her hds*

Is the young wife to blame?
