DEATH OF PAUL.
1 -“For 1 am now ready to be
offered and the time of my de
parture is at hand” Second Tim
othy 4:6
While we have no direct state-
miterit of the derith of this good
apopfle given us in the Bible yet
we are pretty well assured that
he was put to death by order of 1
the Roman Empenor who was
a wicked tyi’ant, and hated the
Christian religion and persecuted!
the church putting to death niaay
good people for no
real cause but on the slightest!
pretext.
Now Paul had been all this
long while in Rome, preaching
and teaching the people of Jesus
also writing to the churches atj
other places as you will see by
reading of his epistles or letters,
theie were several of them, writ'
ten from Rome, and sent by
the hand of some of the friends
who stayed with him for it seems
that for most of the time he had
a number of friends v\ ho would
not leave him and whose pres,
ence was a great comfort to him
but as the time drew near lor him
to be brought before the court
for final trial they began to for
sake, him, and he writes to Tim
othy this last and farewell letter.
And in this 4th chapter he
insists that Timothy should come
to see him, of course he did not
promise him any great pleasure
of entertainment or he was poor,
we don'^ read of any thing he
ppssessed at worldly goods ex
cept some books, and parch'
ments, now these parchments
were ODly dressed skins op
which, in ancient times, their
costly books were|written he tells
Timothy also to bring his cloak
that he left with Carpus at Troas,
possibly that was all of his earth
ly estate, just a cloak'some books
and some parchments on which
he likely hoped to writ? some
more letters before his departure.
It is pitiful to note in this
chapter how he writes Timothy
ot aome who had been with him,
but had left him alone to wait for
the court to say how it should
go with him, but he does not
murmur nor complain of his lot,
now what had he gained by all
his life of service to the church
and for-Christ, an old cloak and
some books, and these at a dis
tance from him and we do not
learn even ' Whether Timothy
ever got to Rome with them for
him or not, most of his friends
had left him, Demus had forsak
en him, and gone to Thessalonia.
