R. Lee Sharpe’s Visit To a Bone
Yard.
I visited a "bone yard’’ in
j-,ake City, Florida that differed
much from the one we have in
Cai rollton.
This "bone yard’’ was kept
up by an old woman (halt In
dian) and contained several car
loads of bones, skulls, etc. ol
animals that had died of starva
tion in this part of the country.
These bones were artistically ( ?1
arranged in every conceivable
shape. Some in towers, and
arches and columns, and others
in flower beds etc. I asked the
old woman why her taste [ran in
the weiid line and she replied,
“Dis am de Lord’s work, he
cum to me in a vision and told
me to go unto all the land about
L<ike City, and gather togeteer
the bones of all animals and I
did, and de angels tell me how
to fix dem, and dis am sacred
ground.” As I looked around,
and noticed the vines twining
around the bone towers and
flowers peeping through the eyp
sockets of many a skull.I thought
if this is the Lord’s work I never
want to see the devil’s work. I
suggested to the old woman I
take a photo of this yard and
she threw up her hands in horror
and said the Lord would send
us both to hell of everlasting fire
if I took a picture. Remember
ing she said this was the Lord’s
work, I asked Charlie ‘Tanner
to take up a collection—when
he poured the coin into her hand
she said “Mister send me pic
tures.”
Most of the pictures have been
put in a large frame and can be
seen at ••Hamrick’s” drug store
window.
