What’s In a Name?
My fel’ojv laborers whose Dames
are in the book of Lite. Phili
lipians 4 =3
There is much suggested in
every human name and we here
note that Paul mentions the fact
ot the names of those who were
his friends and who were as
sisting him in the good work he
was doing, holding in his mind
their names, no doubt but each
name was dear to him, and well
we may keep in mind the names
of those whom we have known,
and that we may know in life.
1 Because each name repre
sents a life, the bear mention of
a name suggests the history,
character and life of the individ
ual, as if we simply mention the
name of Cain, at once we thin*
ol his character, how envious,
how cruel, the scene of the mur
der of his own brother Abel
comes up before us, also if the
name of Abel be Called, hiu-
quick we think of how good he
was and our sympathies go out
as we think ot the blows ot
death falling upon him by the
hand of his cruel brother, Cain.
Also when you see here the
name of Abraham instantly you
think of his going horn his
home and kindred inti a strange
land and so faithfully obeying
all that God told him to do anti
the very mention of his name
brings to mind his long and
I eventful life and < hen causes us
to think of our Heavenly Fathers
table as we remember what
I Jesus said, “They shall comt
; Irom the east and from the west,
: and from the north and from the
| south andjjshall sit down with
Abraham and with Isaac and
with Jacob at my Father’s tab'e,
i then now quick we think ot
the life andwonderlul history ot
Isaac and Jacob.
2 Suppose we mention the
name ot Moses, see how quick
you think of the wee babe iu
the little ark made of rushes,
and floating on the water among
the flags and water lillie c , and
next moment thought reaches to
the palace of the .king whore
Moses was brought up and ed*
ucated and with the celeritv ot
thought as we follow him in his
flight from Egypt, and
wander with him over the plains
of Midian as he watches and
guides the flocks ol Jethro, hU
father in law • but we car not
let our minds loose from Moses
till his eventful life is ended as
the leader ol the hosts of Israel
in all their forty years of wander
jng in the wilderness. So it is
that a name suggests alife, a
history whether good or bad.
Suppose we write Judas, the
traitor, what do you think of?
Of course we think of the night
iu which Jesus was betrayed,the
soldiers, tne torches, the lantern
aud treacherous kiss which he
gave to Jesus as a signal identi.
lying him to the soldiers, so
with others in the material as
well as the spiritual realm. If
we write of George Washinglon
what do you think of? the great
Revolution which gave to our
country liberty : but enough on
this thought, you must see same
thing ot the importance ot a
name as it represents so much
of the life, history, experience
and destiny of the person whose
name we may hear called.
3 Then in conclusion let each
little reader ask what shall my
name mean to the world;
thoughts of the good I have
done or shall it be only a re
minder of an idle and sinlnl
life, gone down in disgrace and
ruin. It is sweet to have a name
in the old family Bible, it is a
joy to have our name written on
the church register: but best of
all to be enrolled in the Book
of life, with those like the fellow
laborers of Paul “whose names
are in the book of life’’ Do you
ever sing the little chorus:
"Is my name written there On the page
white and fair. SS^S
In the book of thy ^kingdom, is my name
written there?”

Working Round to It.
A north country collier, anxious
to pop the question to a girl whom
he honestly admired, but unable to
sum up courage to ask her tha

matrimony.
“Jenny, raa lass,” he said nerv
ously, “Ah’ve insured ma life.”
“Has ta, lad?” said Jenny indif
ferently.
“Ah, and Ah’m a silly for doing

“How’s that?”
“Why, supposin’ Ah get killed’t

“Why, to thy feyther, for sure.”
