A short explanation of the Bit< uation that brings about this re markable event may be interest ing to the readers of the Free Press. In the accompanying cut is shown the sun which is the center of the solar system and around which all the planets re volve from west to east. The earth is third in distance from the sun. Mercury and Venus have their 6rbits within that of the earth and occupy the rela tive positions to each other as indicated in the diagram, where “E” represents the earth, “V” Venus, and “M’’ Mercury. The orbits of all the planets of our system, over sixty in all, revolve around the sun in more or less elyptical orbits and are seperated Irom each other by millions oi miles, and there is no possibility of their coming in contact with one another. Halley’s Comet be longs to our system but revolves from east to west in a very elyp tical orbit and one vastly greater than the orbits of any of the planets. Its orbit it so great that while traveling at the rate of millions of miLs a minute, it takes about seventy five of our years for it to make one revolui tion around the sun. It is now approaching the nearest Dart oi its orbitjo the sun and will soon start on its journey to the re motest regions. But it so haps pens that while leaving our re gions it will pass between us and the sun as shown in the diagram and its tail, which is many million miles long, will for about three hours fall upon the earth as shown in the diagram.
