HARRIS & WILLIAMS Statue of Lee Starts President Taft has approved, without comment, an opinion by Attorney General Wickersham to the effect that there is no provis ion ot law by which the statue of General Robert E, Lee. ii Confederate uniform, can be re moved from Statuary Hall in the Capital at Washington. In addition to deciding the question on a purely legal basis Mr. Wickersham argues the matter from an ethical point of view, declaring that Lee has come to be regarded as typifying all that was best io the cause to which he gave his service and the most loyal and unmurmuring acceptance ot the complete over* throw of that cause. That the state of Virginia should desigi nate him for that place in Status ary Hall as one illustrious for distinguished military service, the Attorney General declares, is only natural and would be un der the reading of law. Mr. Wickersham’s opinion was called lorlh by protests to the President from the depart’ ment of New York, Grand Army of the Republic. Harmony Reigns in Farmers Union. Peace reigns supreme in the ranks of the Farmers Uaion of the state ot Georgia. A. Caba- niss, of Oglethorpe county, was elected president of the organi zation, John Lee retiring. Investigations of the charges against Mr. Lee at Union City where state convention was held, completely exonerated t h e president. J. T. McDaniel was re-elected secretary and treasurer. No action was taken on the charges against R. F. Duckworth and others. Mr. Duckworth is editor of the Union News, pub lished at Union City, and is also chairman of the national legisla ture committee which gathers in Washington when Congress is in session. The Union is the lasgest organized body ot work ing people in the world and is a mighty force in the affairs of this nation. The farmers do not play poli tics, but merely demand fair play at the hands of the politi cians, no matter to what party they belong. During the greater part of the last session of Congress the Union maintained a vigilance committee in Washington to watch the fate 01 measures of interest to farmers, and they did good and effective work. Some of the things which the Union has looked alter and will continue to look alter are; Gambling in farm products stopped, establishment of parcels post, the postals savings bank, and other measures which they contend would be beneficial to them and not iD justice harmlul to anyone else. According to reports made to the state convention, the Georgia State Union is flourishing. The co-operative enterprises at Union City, the amalgamated ware house system and the guano plant are all flourishing, as is the implement tactory. The bed rock of the great organization is co-operation, and this has done wonders for the farmers of the nation through the union. The Union i taking what has been so success ful in other lines of endeavor and transferiing it to its own particular needs and applying it to its own uses. Its first efforts have been successful. It is a a non politi cal, non partisan body ot men “who are aggressive and con structive in the interest of a class upon which the welfare o< the nation hinges” are the words of the Atlanta Georgian. Every good citizen in Georgia rejoioes over the success ot the Union. May it \iever lose its aggressiveness, and may its members and officers never lose sight of the great work it has to perform.—Exchange. For Rent Store room, possesion given Sept 1st. Apply to Geo. Turn' lin or Conner & Bartlett. New Rails being laid The Central Railway is now laying the last forty-mile stretch ot standard 8o'pound rails on its Chattanooga division, and large gangs are at work near Cedar- town and Newnan. This is an important local industrial item for the present, and the laying ot this rail gives the Central a splendid track all the way from Chattanooga to Griffin. General Arsembly Entertained Atlanta, August 1.—This after, noon the house and senate and all the officers of the general assembly of Georgia, including newspaper representatives, clerks etc-, was entertained at the an nual barbecue given by Presi dent Slaton of the senate at Cold Springs. These ^events have become famous throughout Georgia and are looked lorward to with the greatest pleasure.
