CONVINCING PROOF
OF THE VIRTUE OF
Lydia E. PSnkham’s Vegetable Compound
What is the use of procrastinating in the face of such
evidence as the following letters represent? If you are a
sick woman or know one who is, what sensible reason ha\e
you for not giving Lydia E. Pinkham s Vegetable Com
pound a trial ? For 30 years we have been publishing such
testimonial letters as these—thousands of them —they are
genuine and honest, too, every one of them

Here then was given to Mary the
first message of the resurrection,
and she was the first one on earth
to hear the news of the resurrection
and to carr/ to his disciples this
glad message, and he was then
ready to give to them the testimony
of his power over death, and to re
turn to the Father as he had prayed
for the glory which he bad before
the world was.” Just a little while
that they might see him and be
with him before his return to glory
and to reolize the desire, of his
heart as he prayed; so now our sub
ject leads us to think of his victory
over the grave and over all enemies
and none could anymore hurt him
for death had no more dominion
over him, but he was then ready to
go back to heaven and to glory
from whence he came; then let us
look a moment upon the scene of
Mt. Olive.
Where he with his disciples and
many other witnesses, and while he
was speaking to them, of the great
work of the church in carrying the
gospel to all the world saying unto
them, “Ye shall be witnesses unto
me in Jerusalem, and Judea and in
Samaria and unto the uttermost
parts of of the earth, Acts 1:8
and while he spake these Swords
there came a bright cloud from
heaven and enfolded him in its
glory, rising up again from earth
with Jesus ascending to the Father
how earnestly did they look after
him as he rose higher and higher
toward heaven, till he had gone out
of their sight, when suddenly there
was an angel with them saying, “Ye
men of Galilee why stand ye gazing
up into heaven, this same Jesus
whom ye have seen go into heaven,
will in like manner come again.”
So then all who believe in Jesus are
looking for and expecting him to
come again to this world, not to suf
fer again for sin; but to gather home
to heaven with himself all who love
and trust him. and to give them the
glory and joys of heaven; that in
the last great day they may all rise
in triumph over the grave to meet
him in the air. so shall they ever be
with the Lord and see fulfilled his
gracious words as they ascend with
him according to his own words as
he defines the holy relation between
himself and those who believe on
him in his saying “I ascend unto
my Father and your Father, and to
my God and your God."

Speaking For the Chicken*.
A southerner, hearing a great
commotion in his chicken house one
dark night, took his revolver and
went to investigate.
“Who’s there?” lie sternly
mantled, opening the door.
No answer.
“Who’s there ? Answer or
•hoot!”
A trembling voice from the far
thest corner:
“ ’Deed, sab, dev ain’t nobody
hyah ’ceptin’ us chickens.”—Every
body’s Magazine.
The Word “Salary.”
The way languages are built up
is very interesting, and the deriva
tion of the word “salary” is curious
as well. In ancient times Roman
soldiers received a daily portion of
salt as part of their pay. “Sal” i«
the Latin for salt, and when the salt
was in course of time commuted for
money the amount was called salari-
um or salt money, hence our word
“salary” and hence, doubtless, the
expression “not worth his salt”—
that is, not worth hi3 “salt money”
»r salary.

The Pont Notre Dame is tile oldest
bridge in Paris. It was first built in
1413 in tlie reign of Charles VI., but it
was carried away, together with the
houses which lined it. by ice floes
when the frost broke in 1409. A new
bridge was begun at once under the
direction of Jean Joconde of Verona
and was ready for traflic in 1507. Or.
