Organizing The Farmers
To the officers and the members
of the Farmers Union:—
Today the Farmers Union is nat
ional in the largest sense. It has
state organizations on the Pacific
coast, state organizations on the
Atlantic coast, state organizations
on the Gulf coast and on the Great
Lakes. In seven years it has grown
from a handful of energetic and
hopeful men captained by Newt
Gresham at Point, Tex., to an Amer
ican army varying from a million to
two and a half million members,
covering men engaged in every
spices of Agriculture in the United
States.
I think I can detach myself suffi
ciently from my love for the inter
est in this work to realize that this
expansion represents achievement,
and phenomenal achievement a t
that.
I cheerfully venture the assertion

the civilized world has ever record
ed;so marvelous a growth. The best
feature is its stability.
We have organized the American
farmer “for keeps”
Yet even in the face of this not
able achievement, and the shadow of dispensation of God's providence
greater things to come, we find here ! the state has lost a loyal citizen,
and there with in the order, ami the church a conscientious member
here and there from carping critics j and the family their main stay, the
without the order, questioning to! one whose duty it was to advise;
why we have not made vaster direct and admonish; those whose

The deceased was a splendid citi- ed for the levying of such tax in
zen, a consistent Christian, a kind counties in the state where there
and affectionate father, and in this I are now no adequately supported
high schools. The need for better
high schools is becoming more and
strides.
The perfection of national or in
ternational organization is the most
arduous and gradual task in the
range of humanity’s endeavors. I
might cite two overshadowing organ
izations from the industrial world
as illustrations: The Standard Oil
and the United Sates Steel Copor-
ation. In their way and in'.their
peculair spheres they are models of
organization—at least, the average
privilege it was to lean upon the
fathers strong arm. And since it
is the highest duty of an Odd Fellow
to lighten the burden of the brethren
as much as it lies within his power
to do so. Be it resolved,
That we extend to our brother
our deepest sympathy in his sore
bereavement and support him in
his affliction as becometh brethren,
and commend him to the Great
Physician who alone has power to
citizen who feels the effect of their heal the wounds of the broken
force, will not deny the fact.
Now the Farmers Union has no
desire or intention to rival these
over-reaching monopolies, but their
matchless triumph of organization
can teach us something beneficial.
We can profit from the constructive
lesson they have to offer and reject
the practice that have placed some
of their promoters upon an evil em
inence in this country.
Now. then—it took decades and
decades to perfect these great or
ganizations. They began first with
straggling and struggling groups.
At various stages in .the history they
were dealt blows that
hearted.
That this be spread upon the
minutes of our lodge, a copy furn
ished our bereaved brother and the
county papers for publication.
Respectfully submitted,
A. D. Turner,

Finally I was confined to my bed and
the doctor said an operation was neces
sary. I gave Lydia E. I’inkham’s Veg

Thirty years of unparalleled success
confirms the power of Lydia E. Pink-

female diseases. The great volume of

E. I’inkham’s Vegetable Compound is
a remarkable remedy for those dis

been deadly had not the man be
hind been actuated by fixedjpurpose
and unwavering courage.
Another thing—these two con
cerns have always, or nearly always
had at their desposal all the advan
tages afforded by command of un
limited capital and the best of order
of trained brains in the country.
Yet they have grown piecemeal
so to speak, by. the progress of evo
lution, thiough infinite backsets and
discouragements and panics, until
today they stand as the supreme
embodiments of organization.
The Farmers’ Union has made
progress even more phenomenal
than these two organizations, and
that without the advantage confer
red by money, for the reason that
our guiding principals have been
righteous where theirs have been
those rising from greed.
But on the side of patience and
of the spirit that is willing to wait
for results, perfectly confident of ul
timate success, they abound in ob
ject lessons.
I want every member of the Far
mers’ Union however obscoure, to re
member we are building for tomor
row as well as for today; for our
children’s children as well as for our
selves; that we are laying a solid
foundation for the solving of prob
lems that will test American mettle
decades after we are dust.
I look forward to the day when
every American farmer belongs to
an agricultural organization as one
of the brightest days in the history
of this country. It may not come
in my time, nor in the time of my
children. But I know it is destined
and that at the Jrate the Farmers’
Union is growing we will not have
to woit an indefinite number, of
years for the consummation.
Let us, first, concede that the
farmer is the most important ele
ment in the national life. Let us,
next, concede that he has been sys
tematically neglected, in the way of
legislation and social viewpoint, since
the founding of the republic. Let
us, next concede that the day he is
formed into one compact, unanim
ous national organization he will be
able to secure his rights to redress
his wrongs and to inject sanity and
equity into the nation’s government
in a degree that has never been ap
proximated in American history.
These are some of the ends to
wdich we are working. While we
labor for the farmer, we laber for
the entire country, for the country
is no greater, no more prosperous,
no more moral or safer from .canker
or disintegration than is its great
rural population. Charles S. Barrett.

Mr Joseph Saul of Atlanta, is here
with us in Carrollton for a few days,
looking over his interest. We learn
that Mr. Saul, is the president of a
syndicate of 42 dry goods stores
through Georgia and Alabama. He
informs us that he is in Carrollton
with the intention of enlarging The
Fair on Alabama Street, a link in
his chain of stores, and intends to
add a wholesale department in this
popular store in Carrollton. His
syndicate is located and running a
factory and wholesale houses in
New York, Boston, St. Louis and
Atlanta.
This speaks well for Carrollton,
we wish him much luck.
