“BEN HUR.”
The management of the Orpheum
Theatre, Atlanta, Ga„ have arranged
with Klaw & Erlanger for the pre
sentation of Lew Wallace’s powerful
religio-historic. spectacle “Ben Hur,”
the entire week of Dec. 5 to 10,
with matinees Wednesday and Sat
urday
“Ben Hur” with its lustrous “Star
oj Bethlehem," its camels, Arabian
steeds. Oriental trappery and mimic
splendor of the gorgeous East, is be
yond doubt the most elaborate
spectacle ever staged in the history
of the world. Its series of scenes
present to the eye a feast of multi
farious beauty and variety all set
to a symphonic accompaniment of
graceful music. The exciting epi
sodes, such as the galley scene with
its horde of chained slaves, the sea-
fight, the rescue in mid-sea, the
thrilling race with the picturesque
scenes representing the appearance
of tlie Star to the Wise men in the
Desert, the moonlit lake in the
Orchard of Palms, where Ben Hur
and Iras make love while drifting
in the barge of the fair Egyptian,
the palm waving worshippers on
the Mount of Olives, simply capti
vate the great audiences that are
nightly in attendance wherever it
is being enacted.
As now arranged and staged by
Klaw &. Erlanger, the public sees
a great spectacle which appeals not
merely on the strength of its
dramatic values, but as a colossal
and picturesque pageant: And in
the chariot race, the scene which,
coupled with the popularity of Gen
eral Wallace’s book, gave the play
its enormous vogue, eight horses,
aided by the most intricate mechan
isms, produce the prodigious illusion
of the struggle for supremacy in
the arena of the Circus of Antioch.
Edgar Stillman Kelley’s brilliant
musical score, which so heightens
the ^dignity and solemnity of the
Biblical narrative, and was one of
the most potent factors in its suc
cess, is made a dominant feature
of the present production, being in
terpreted by a special orchestra and
chorus carried by the company for
that purpose.
Seats for “Ben Hur” will be
placed on sale at the Orpheum
Theatre box-office Thursday morn
ing, Dec. 1st. Prices will range from
50 cents to $2.00. It is advisable
for persons who intend visiting
Atlanta to see this great spectacle,
to reserve seats at once by mail.
The management of the Orpheum
announce that speeial attention
will be given to all mail orders.

The particular scents about The
News and Banner office the first of
the week indicated neither the death
or rottenness of the force. During
Monday night a large skunk creeped
into the office through an opening
in the floor which had been left ac
cidentally unclosed, and suffered
himself captured by a trap set for
some rats which had been infesting
the place: Nobody was willing to
handle his skunkship, and he was
dispatched with a gun in a rear
corner of the office to which he had
pulled the trap. No need to say the
office was vacated for an hour or
two, and that friends were shy of
the place all day.—Franklin News.
