Because when you give to your crops the right
sort of available plant food, you grow crops
that yield you good money at a little cost.
Users of
may also be mixed with the other
fertilizing elements and buried in
the ground ten days to two weeks
before planting a crop without dan
ger of any material loss of nitrogen
through too rapid fermentation or
leaching. This is a great advantage
since it is often desirable, for in
stance, to bed up cotton and prepare
corn land and apply the fertilizer a
few days before planting.

As to the amountjof cotton seed
meal to[use;[that depends on the crop
the soil and the grade of fertilizer it
is desirable to use under a given
set of conditions. Since the meal
only carries from six to seven per
cent of nitrogen, one cannot make
a fertilizer as high in this element
as may sometimes be desirable, but
this need never preclude its use,
because an application of nitrate of
soda in the form of a top dressing
will enable the crop to receive the
additional nitrogen neededjat a time
when it can utilize it to the best
advantage and when there is no
danger of its being lost through
washing and leachin‘. The cotton
seed meal in the meantime has been
put in the soil where it will become
relatively slowly available and will
tend to supply the needs of the crop
with nitrogen through a compara
tively long growing season.
Cotton seed meal also has the
advantage of carrying from it 2 to
2.5 per cent of phosphoric acid and
from 1 to 1.5 per cent of potash. It
is not a complete fertilizer in the
sense of being balanced in the es-
sentional elements it provides for
crop nutrition, but it can be easily
improved through the use of acid
phosphate and muriate of potash. It
has the great advantage of mixing
with these materials without the
slightest injury since no objection
able chemical reactions occur.
One may easily secure a fertilizer
from high-grade cotton seed meal,
16 per cent acid phosphate and
high-grade muriate of potash which
will show a per centage analysis of
1.8 per cent nitrogen 10.3 per cent
phosphoric acid and 5.6 per cent
potash - - a splendid formula to use
under both corn and cotton on clay
or somewhat sandy land. If these
soils are deficient in nitrogen, or the
crop seems to suffer from lack of
this element, as shown by the yellow
character of the foliage and the
stunted growth,;l 00 pounds of nitrate
of soda applied as a top dressing
during the growing season would
bring the per centage of nitrogen up
to 2.63,1 thus overcoming any de
ficiency in nitrogen in the soil, and
supplying an essential element at a
critical time in the life history of the
crop.
Thus, cotton seed meal could be
most advantageously used as the
sourse of organic nitrogen, supplying
this element in a cheap and effici
ent form without danger of loss or
injury to the soil; and if a crop ro
tation has not been pursued, any
additional nitrogen could be easily
and cheaply applied through a top
dressing with nitrate during the
growing season. On the other hand
if the farmer were pursuing a proper
crop rotation so as to supply the
land with even a moderate amount
of vegatable matter, the formula
suggested, which could be prepared
from the exclusive £use 0 f cotton
seed meal, acid phosphate and mu
riate of potash'would provide a high
grade fertilizer excellently adapted
to meet his needs.
Should it be desirable to prepare
a fertilizer' for very sandy lands
which are deficient in potash, the
same formula indicated might be
used, and to each 500 to ;1000 lbs.
applied per acre add 50 to 100 lbs.
of muriate of potash. It would be
very easy for the farmer to either
apply this separately as a side ap
plication shortly after the crop is
up or to mix it with the portion put
on each acre, as he saw proper. In
this way the per cent, of potash
