OFFICIAL ORGAN OF
CARROLL COUNTY.
LOCAL AND LONG) DISTANCE ‘PHONE NO.
249
Carrollton, Ga.,February 9 1911
Carrollton evidently has no room
within her borders for a near-beer
saloon.
The “Woodmen of the World’
seems to be a live and most vigorous
order, and the local lodge is growing
rapidly.
Hoke Smith,, in a recent inter
view, favors better rural schools and
better agricultural conditions. These
have been his hobbies for years, and
we hope they will continue to be so.
In the near future, "Carroll County
Day” will be observed at the A. & M.
School, and the Hon. Murphy Cand
ler will be the orator of the day. He
is a pure and upright statesman and
forceful speaker, and will have some
thing good [for this hearers. While
we do not think that the other coun
ties of the Fourth District have done
for the A. & }M. School what they
ought to have done, and what their
interests demand they should do,
yet Carroll has, so [far, done nobly,
and ; proposes to still cherish and
pull for the interests of this school.
■ We believe ’ there will be a great
rallying of the people of the county
at the school .buildings on “Carroll
County Day."
Whitesburg News
Uncle John 'Kilgore has been
down with rheumatism this week.
James Capes visited Whitesburg
Monday.
J. R. Borders spent part of Wed
nesday in our burg. He has been
selling mules in Carrollton this win-;
ter for the Stewart & Fleming
stables.
Jas. Hilley came in from Paul's
Tuesday.
Misses Mary and Lena Hogan, of
Carrollton, visited Mr. and Mrs. I
Murphy Sunday.
Ben Kelly left Wednesday for a
two or three days business trip to
Atlanta.
Richard Parks came in from
Newnan Tuesday.
Prof. Johnson, who has charge of
the Newnan Band, came over last
Saturday night and assisted Prof.
Bevisjin organizing a Band in
Whitesburg. They succeeded in
getting some seventeen or eighteen
men and boys to join. We will now
soon be having some band music (?)
here.
Among those who joined were
Grady . Jones, Tom Duncan. Brice
McClendon, “Bill" Murphy, Jas. A.
Kelly, Sam Stevens, Harold Lip
scomb, Walter Hines, Wesley Camp,
Prof. Bevis. Bernard and Jim Tread
well, Earnest and Luby Bailey, Loyd
Duncan, Everett Hight, Chas. Edge-
worth, John Clark and others. The
band instruments will be here next
week.
The citizens of Decatur have or
ganized to make their town the ‘City
Beautiful’ of Georgia, and the enter
prising ‘Ladies Club' of Cedartown
is offering [Jpremiums for the best
kept premises in the city, and the
most beautiful flower yards. This
is in line with what the Free Press
has been insistently urging upon the
good people of Carrollton by advo
cating a cleaning-up day, the plant
ing of more shade trees and the
beautifying of premises, We hope
work along these lines will be push
ed in our mftlst. It means health
and comfort and attractiveness, and
is the very best way to advertise the
splendid ^advantages of the best
town in Western Georgia.
February 22nd is the day appoint
ed for the meeting of our farmers
and others to |discuss the question
of good seed corn. Supervisors of
demonstration farm work will be
present to take part in the meeting.
Later, sometime in March, the Agri
cultural train with a splendid .outfit
will spend three hours in our city.
Everywhere this Traveling Agricul
tural College has gone it has been
enthusiastically received and largely
attended. We are sure that the
enterprising farmers of Carroll
County will take advantage of ^both
these occasion. Keep them in mind
and be sure to attend each.
Not many of our people are aware
we, fear, that Carrollton has a Public
Library, much less , do they know
how largely it is patronized. The
membership is about one-tenth what
it should be, and yet about fifteen
hundred books are annually taken
from the library and presumably
read. What a power and influence
for good is here. The enterprise
certainly merits the support of our
people. The membership fee is very
small, especially in view of the great
advantages offered. Enroll your name
at once as a member and help keep
up a good work. Miss Lula Baskin
is the Librarian and will be glad to
see you on the afternoon of Monday,
Wednesday and Friday of each week
at the Library room.J
BAD CASE
OF GRIP
Caused Sore Throat and Ton-
silitis. Restored by
Peruna.
Mr. W. H.
H o u s 1 o y,
Stony Point,
Ten nessee,
writes:
“Five years
ago I took a
very severe
cold which
resulted In
la grippe. I
never was
so bad off. I
was In bed
several
weeks, and
when I did
get up I had
t o n s i I i tis
and sore
throat.
“I tried to cure this for eighteen
months, hut It gradually got worse. A
doctor advised me to have my tonsils
cut out, but I did not like the idea.
Another doctor examined me, and told
me the same thing. I finally got a bot
tle of Peruna, and after I had taken
one bottle my throat was better. I
bought and used a dozen bottles, and
saw I was going to get well, and I did."
Mr. W. H. Housley.
Mr. and Mrs. Bird Parks came
over from Newnan Monday in their
new automobile and spent the day
with Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kelly, re
turning in the evening.
Mr. Bockover Toy, of Atlanta,
visited Jas. A. Kelley the latter part
of last week.
Rev. W. W. Kelly [has been sick

Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jones spent
Tuesday in Carrollton.

Bremen as the guest of his father
and mother.
Mrs. J. H. Lipscomb visited Mrs.
Dr. Carter in Carrollton last week.
We regret very much to |learn of
the death of old Bro. Davenport, of
Clem. He served his day and gen
eration well and lived to a ripe old
age. His many friends in this com
munity [[tender their sympathy to
the family.
Jas. A. Kelley went up to Carroll
ton on the night train Monday and
attended the lecture by Mr. Miles.
Th« “Trading” Rat.
An animal whose instinct teaches
it to give something in return for
that which nature has taught it to
steal should be capable of a busi
ness education. A curious state
ment is made about the “trading”
rat, which is one of the unique and
interesting animals met with in the
Rocky mountains.
Miners of the region declare that,
although these rats enter houses,
camps and mines and take things
that do not belong to them, they
never take an article without leav
ing something in its place. They
conduct a trade, and hence their
name.
They enter dwellings at night
and steal anything they can find,
carrying away spoons, knives and
forks, but invariably leaving a chip,
•tick or stone in place of each artj
cle taken away.
