Many persons in this country who feel, possibly, that

After hearing all the evidence of
the complainants in the case of the
Carrollton Board of Trade against
the Central railroad and connecting
lines, in which freight rate discrim
ination is charged, Judge Judson C.
Clements, chairman of the interstate
commerce commission, adjourned
the session Tuesday jafternoon to a
date to be announced later.
Judge Clements has other press
ing business in' Rome at this time
and for that reason decided to post
pone the hearing. The next hear
ing of the case will be heard in
Washington; D. C.
The Board of Trade charged in its
petition that the Central and con
necting lines charge a higher freight
rate to Carrollton than is charged
to Newnan, Cedarlown, and other
points i i the vicinity: that it once
enjoyed equal rates with these points
but it has been discriminated against
sinee the Central f purchased the
Chattanooga, Rome anci Columbus
railroad and competition ceased.
It was asserted that the impor
tance of Carrollton as a market de
mands that it shall be given epual
rights in the matter of freight .rates.
It was shown that shipments of
Ireight can be shipped through Car
rollton to Newnan and other points
at a rate cheaper than they can be
shipped to Carrollton, and a strong
attack was made on this feature of
the case, which it is charged is an
unjust .discrimination against Car
rollton.
The petitioners were represented
at the hearing by Attorney Edgar
Watkins, of Atlanta, while the rail
roads were represented by Attorneys
Nelson ^Proctor, of Louisville, and
M. P. Callaway, of Washington.

In connection 'with the
move to have our Post Office hours
so regulated as to ipermit the em
ployees the privilege of attending
church services on Sunday, I would
be glad for you to publish the fol
lowing strong and sane words by
Justice John M. Harlan of the Su
preme Court of the United States:-
“There is no reason for such a
flagrant desecration of God’s day
as one sees here in Washington.
When the mail carriers deliver mail
on Sunday, they violate the holy
day, and, therefore, I hope they will
be stopped and allowed to rest on
Sunday. Here in Washington you
can find a transgression of Sunday
everywhere you look. It is a shame
that certain people from New York
with big bank rolls should be al
lowed to come to Washington and
give Sifnday dinners and supper
parties when that day should be de
voted to the work of God. I wish
there was some way to stop this
unwelcome influx into the Capital.
It is an outrage that dinner parties
are given by these predatory rich
persons on Sunday evenings, when
they should be devoted to other and
higher things.”
These words, in a way, apply to
Carrollton in that the Post Office
work as it now is, keeps some, at
least, away from God’s work and
worship. This should not he and
need not be. W. E. D.
