Bass Atlanta. spent Wednesday in Why Not Tell The Truth? Some of the complaints of noth- ern negroes were given an airing in New York on Thursday night last at a meeting of the local branch of the National Association for the Ad vancement of Colored People. The speakers included the in evitable Professor W. E. B. DuBois, who said that the “Closing of the hotels and places of amusement to colored people” should be "contested" Another speaker, who in the New York Times’ report is listed as Dr. Springham, made the following re markable assertion: "We in the North suffer from the interference of the South. It is the Southerners— women generally, but sometimes men—who have forced on Northern hotels their ideas. It is through the Southern chivalry that it can hap pen that so far away as Switzerland somebody, who happens to be the niece or the cousin, is forced to leave a hotel because a Southern lady objects to her presence" We have heard of the “habit of command” which the old slavery institution is supposed to have 2 de veloped among Southerners of the wealthier class, but it is somewhat surprising to learn that the quality is so alive and vigorous in the trav- ling Southerner of our time that he can dominate the hotels of the world singlehanded and at a word. Not one out of a hundred of the patrons of the average Northern hotel is Southern or of Southern birth and to imagine that so small an ele ment could force hotel managements to draw the color line against their own wishes and contrary to public sentiment is to be guilty of the ver iest nonsense. Northern negroes and their friends make this ridicu lous charge for two reasons. They hope to forward their purposes by stirring up old sectional prejudices and they have learned that it is bad policy to complain directly of the Northern masses because of dis criminations against the blacks. Like certain white Northern editors, they know of good reasons either for ignoring the “problem” at thier doors or for falsely attributing its existence to Southern influence. If Northern hotel clerks turn away even such educated and light-col ored persons as Booker Washington and Proffesor DuBois with the dis ingenuous announcemeno that the house is “full” and then proceed to assign rooms to later applicants of the White race, it is for a more im portant reason than that in the dis tent South the color line is frankly drawn and that some lone South erner may turn up a day or two and protest. —Macon Telegraph. If There are few histories in existence that do not somewhere note the use of perfume by a people, aud there is none of our best literature that does not hint at the subtle influence that women of power have wielded by the use of delicate perfumes that gave an individuality to their persons. A lovely and refined woman surround ed by a light flower scent, ever suggests a vision of spring and sunshine, especial ly in winter, even without seeing them we feel the presence of the little flower elves, they nestle in the graceful folds of her gown; play in the soft waves of her hair; fly over her delicate hands and kiss her smiling lips; they play hide and seek over hqr note paper and convey fragrant greetings to her friend or sweetheart; even in my lady’s handkerchief they leave a brave and fra grant war against her bitter enemy, the fatal bacillus. Tf And the same little charitable spirits waft through the sick chamber bring relief and comfort to the patient; purifying the air and also by magic picturing to his mind pleasant reminescences of sunshine and blooming nature. The most artistic creation of the perfume art is J. Blocki & Son’s “Flower in the Bottle’’ Empress Line, and is sold at “The Leader” Hamrick’s, who would be pleased to have you call and sample this this most exclusive line. 6 Sk r -S WEST POINT ROUTE (A £ w. p.
